A 2-week Sri Lanka plan for hikers

Sri Lanka is not a trekking destination in the Himalayan sense. There are no week-long routes with porters. What it has is an unusual density of half-day and full-day walks, through cloud forest, tea and open grassland, within a few hours of one another. Two weeks is enough to string the best of them together, with a rock fortress at one end and a swim at the other.

Quick answer

A 2-week Sri Lanka plan for hikers spends two nights at Sigiriya, two in the Knuckles range, one in Kandy, one at the foot of Adam's Peak, two in Nuwara Eliya for Horton Plains, one in Haputale, two in Ella and two on the south coast. It includes eight to ten walks of two to six hours each. Adam's Peak is climbed in the pilgrimage season, roughly December to May; outside it, the night moves to Ella.

Key takeaways

  • The Knuckles range, north-east of Kandy, has Sri Lanka's most varied day hikes and requires a local guide.
  • Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) is a night climb of roughly 5,500 steps, best done in the pilgrimage season from roughly December to May.
  • The World's End loop at Horton Plains is roughly 9 km and takes three to four hours, starting at dawn.
  • The Pekoe Trail is a waymarked walking route of roughly 300 km in 22 stages through the tea country, and single stages make good day walks.
  • Ella Rock takes roughly four to five hours return, and Little Adam's Peak roughly 45 to 90 minutes.

The 2-week plan for hikers at a glance

The 2-week Sri Lanka plan for hikers follows the spine of the central highlands from north to south. Hard days are separated by easier ones, and the two nights on the coast at the end are for recovery, not sightseeing.

  • →Sigiriya, two nights: Sigiriya Rock and Pidurangala.
  • →Knuckles range, two nights: one full-day and one half-day guided hike.
  • →Kandy, one night: the Hanthana ridge or the Udawattakele forest.
  • →Nallathanniya, one night: the night climb of Adam's Peak.
  • →Nuwara Eliya, two nights: a recovery day, then Horton Plains.
  • →Haputale, one night: Lipton's Seat and a stage of the Pekoe Trail.
  • →Ella, two nights: Ella Rock and Little Adam's Peak.
  • →South coast, two nights: rest by the sea.

The Knuckles range: the wildest walking

The Knuckles range, known in Sinhala as Dumbara, lies roughly one and a half to two and a half hours from Kandy, depending on the trailhead. It forms part of the Central Highlands UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its trails cross cloud forest, grassland, rivers and working villages.

Hikes in the Knuckles need a local guide: paths are unmarked, the weather changes quickly and permits are checked at entry points. Leeches are active in the wetter months. Two nights at a simple lodge near Riverston, Deanston or Meemure allow one long day and one shorter walk.

Adam's Peak and Horton Plains

Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) is the island's great pilgrimage climb. From Nallathanniya, roughly 5,500 steps rise to the 2,243-metre summit, and most walkers start around 2am to arrive for sunrise. Allow two and a half to four hours up and nearly as long down. The descent is what the knees remember.

Horton Plains National Park, roughly one to one and a half hours from Nuwara Eliya, is the opposite kind of walk: a level loop of roughly 9 km across grassland and cloud forest to the escarpment at World's End. Cloud usually fills the view by mid-morning, so the gate at opening is the time to be there.

  • →Put a rest day between Adam's Peak and Horton Plains.
  • →Adam's Peak at weekends and on poya days is extremely crowded; choose a weekday.
  • →Plastic wrappers are checked and removed at the Horton Plains gate.

Haputale and Ella: tea trails and ridges

Haputale sits on a ridge with views to the south coast on a clear morning. The walk up through the Dambatenne estate to Lipton's Seat is roughly 7 km each way, or can be shortened by tuk-tuk. Several stages of the Pekoe Trail pass through this area, on old estate paths between tea and eucalyptus.

Ella, roughly 45 minutes to an hour away, is the most popular walking base in the country. Ella Rock is a four to five hour return walk that begins along the railway line, and Little Adam's Peak is an easy 45 to 90 minutes. Both are best at sunrise.

When to walk, and what to carry

The best months for this hiking plan are January to April, when the hill country is at its driest and Adam's Peak is in season. From May to September, the western side of the hills is wet, so the plan drops Adam's Peak and gives extra time to Ella and Haputale on the drier eastern side.

  • →Footwear: trail shoes with grip are enough; boots are not essential.
  • →Layers: Horton Plains and Adam's Peak are cold before dawn, often below 10 degrees Celsius.
  • →Leeches: long socks and repellent for the Knuckles and any wet forest.
  • →Water: carry at least two litres on longer walks; refill points are few.
  • →Sun: start early everywhere; midday heat is draining even at altitude.

Planning a hiking fortnight in Sri Lanka

A hiking fortnight in Sri Lanka is better with a driver than without one, because trailheads are scattered and public transport rarely reaches them at dawn. The driver also carries the luggage, which means walking with a day pack.

Lankan Stays & Trails can arrange Knuckles guides and lodges, and will reorder the route if rain closes a trail. Choose this plan if walking is the purpose of the trip; choose the standard 14-day route if two or three shorter walks are enough.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sri Lanka good for hiking?

Yes. Sri Lanka has excellent day hikes in a small area: the Knuckles range, Adam's Peak, Horton Plains, the tea trails around Haputale and the ridges above Ella. Most take two to six hours, and a two-week trip can include eight to ten of them.

What is the best month for hiking in Sri Lanka?

January to April is best for hiking in the hill country, with the driest trails and Adam's Peak in season. From May to September, the eastern side of the hills around Ella and Haputale stays drier than Nuwara Eliya and Hatton.

Do I need a guide to hike in Sri Lanka?

A guide is needed in the Knuckles range, where paths are unmarked and permits are checked. Horton Plains, Little Adam's Peak and Adam's Peak are easy to follow without one. For Ella Rock, the route is confusing in places and a local guide or a good map helps.

How hard is Adam's Peak?

Adam's Peak is strenuous but not technical. The climb is roughly 5,500 steps, taking two and a half to four hours up from Nallathanniya, mostly at night. The descent is hard on the knees. Reasonably fit walkers manage it comfortably with a steady pace and rest stops.

Can I hike the Pekoe Trail in two weeks?

Not all of it alongside other sights. The Pekoe Trail runs for roughly 300 km in 22 stages through the tea country. In a two-week trip, two or three single stages near Hatton, Haputale or Ella fit well as day walks.

Are there leeches on hikes in Sri Lanka?

Yes, in wet forest and after rain, especially in the Knuckles range, Sinharaja and parts of the hill country. They are harmless but unpleasant. Long socks, tucked-in trousers and repellent or salt keep most of them off.
