What is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
December to April is the best time for the south & west coasts, the hill country and the Cultural Triangle. May to September is best for the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) and the north. Because the two monsoons hit opposite sides of the island, there is always a dry region to visit.
Which month should I avoid?
October and early November see inter-monsoon showers that can affect the whole island. You can still travel then, and prices are at their lowest, but plan some flexibility into your days.
When can I see the Kandy Esala Perahera?
The Esala Perahera runs for ten nights in July or August, ending on the Esala full moon (Poya). Exact dates change each year, so book early. Hotels in Kandy fill months ahead.
When is whale watching season in Sri Lanka?
Off Mirissa on the south coast from November to April, and off Trincomalee on the east coast from May to October.
