Sri Lanka packs beaches, hill country, ancient cities and wildlife into an island that a couple can genuinely cross in a couple of weeks, which is rare among long-haul destinations. Canadians flying from Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal are looking at roughly 16 to 22 hours door to door with at least one connection, most commonly through a Gulf hub such as Doha, Abu Dhabi or Dubai, though current schedules can change and are worth checking when you book.

The time difference is real and worth planning around rather than ignoring. Public affection is one area where Sri Lanka differs from home. Handholding is unremarkable, but overt affection in temples, villages and on public transport draws attention in a way it would not in Canada, while resort grounds, private villas and quiet beach stretches are a different matter entirely.

Sri Lankan cuisine, built around rice and curry, hoppers and fresh seafood along the coast, is worth treating as an experience rather than background.
