What to book and when for a 7-day Sri Lanka itinerary

The booking order for a 7-day Sri Lanka itinerary follows a simple principle: book first whatever constrains everything else, or is hardest to replace. Flights constrain the first and last days; the train constrains the middle of the week; the best hotels are the hardest to replace in peak season.

Once those are fixed, the rest of the week slots in around them. Activities that can be booked locally, such as safaris and whale watching, should usually wait, since weather and energy on the day matter more than a fixed booking.

In the December to April peak, and especially over Christmas and New Year, every stage of the timeline moves earlier. In the shoulder months and on the east coast from May to September, there is more flexibility.

Flights come first because arrival and departure times decide how days 1 and 7 of the 7-day route work. A morning arrival allows the drive straight to Sigiriya; a late-evening arrival means a Negombo night. An evening departure allows Galle Fort on the last morning; an early one does not.

When comparing flights, look at these times as well as the price. A slightly more expensive flight that lands in the morning can be better value than a cheaper one that lands at midnight, since it gives the week an extra usable afternoon.

Check connection times through the hub carefully. A very short connection can save an hour on paper and cost a day if it is missed, which on a seven-day trip is a large share of the holiday. A connection of two to three hours is a sensible target on most routes.

Reserved seats on the Kandy to Ella train are the most time-sensitive booking of the week. In high season they sell out well ahead, and the train date fixes the Kandy night before and the Ella night after.

Check the current booking window and method when planning, since they change, and book as soon as seats for your date become available. Have a fallback in mind, such as boarding at Nanu Oya or driving, in case the seats you want are gone.

Because the train fixes the middle of the week, it is worth booking it before committing to the Kandy and Ella hotels. If the seats you want are only available on a different day, the Cultural Triangle nights can usually be adjusted to match.

With the flights and train fixed, book hotels, starting with the stops that fill first. In the December to April season, those are the south coast and the best properties near Sigiriya; over Christmas and New Year, book coast hotels as early as possible and check for gala dinner supplements and minimum stays.

Book a private driver at the same time as the hotels. The most experienced drivers are in demand in peak season, and the driver needs your flight details and route in advance. Share special requirements, such as child seats, at this stage.

Kandy and Ella single-night stays can usually be booked slightly later, though small, popular guesthouses in Ella fill quickly in peak weeks.

Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, applied for online before travel. Apply a few weeks before departure, after checking the current official requirements, and keep a copy of the approval.

This is also the time to arrange travel insurance, check whether any vaccinations or health advice apply to you, set up an eSIM or plan to buy a local SIM on arrival, and tell your bank you are travelling.

Several bookings on a 7-day Sri Lanka itinerary are better left until close to the date, or until you are in Sri Lanka. Jeep safaris at Minneriya, Kaudulla and Udawalawe can usually be arranged a day or two ahead, and local drivers choose the park by where the elephants are. Whale-watching trips from Mirissa are usually bookable a few days ahead, though larger boats fill sooner in peak weeks.

Site guides at Sigiriya and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic are available at the entrance. Cooking classes, spa treatments and surf lessons can usually be booked locally.

The exceptions are special events. Seats for the Kandy Esala Perahera, usually in July or August, and Yala safaris over the busiest holiday periods should be booked in advance.
