Colombo airport and your first two hours

The sequence is immigration, baggage reclaim, then customs. Immigration will want your passport and your electronic travel authorisation or visa, plus an onward ticket and an address for your first night, so have those accessible rather than buried in a bag.

Entry requirements for Sri Lanka have changed several times in recent years, including periods of fee waivers for certain nationalities, so check the current position on the official government portal shortly before you travel rather than relying on older guidance. Apply through the official site, not through the many lookalike agency sites that charge a markup.

SIM card counters for the main Sri Lankan networks are inside the arrivals area, and buying there is the single most useful thing you can do at the airport. Tourist data packages are inexpensive by international standards, coverage is good across the country, and having data from the moment you land makes transfers, maps and messaging straightforward. Bring your passport, which is required for registration.

Currency exchange counters and ATMs are also in the arrivals hall, and rates at the airport are generally reasonable rather than punitive. Change or withdraw enough for your first day or two: many small businesses, entry tickets and tuk-tuks are cash only, and rural ATMs can be unreliable.

There are four realistic options. A pre-booked transfer through your hotel or tour operator is the least stressful, with a driver holding a name board past customs. The official airport taxi desk inside the terminal gives fixed, metered rates and is the safest walk-up option. Ride-hailing apps operate and are usually cheapest, with a designated pickup area, though they need working data, which is another argument for the SIM counter.

There is also an expressway bus service to Colombo, which is inexpensive and reasonable if you are travelling light and arriving in daylight. What you should avoid is accepting an unsolicited offer from someone approaching you in the arrivals hall, which is where inflated fares and unexpected shopping detours originate.

Plan on these approximate road times, and add an hour to anything crossing Colombo during rush hour. The expressway network has transformed journeys to the south, but the roads inland to Kandy and the hill country remain slow and winding.

The important planning consequence is that arriving on a late flight and driving straight to Kandy or Galle means arriving in the small hours. Very few travellers regret spending their first night in Negombo.

Negombo, fifteen minutes away, is the standard answer and a good one, particularly for flights landing late at night. It has a wide range of accommodation, a long beach, a genuinely interesting fish market and lagoon, and it lets you start the real itinerary fresh the next morning.

Waikkal, slightly further north, is quieter and greener with better hotels. Colombo makes sense if you specifically want the city's restaurants. Driving straight to Kandy or the Cultural Triangle on arrival day is possible but only advisable if you land in the morning.

Arrive three hours before an international departure. The terminal has a security screening at the entrance before check-in, which adds time, and check-in queues for full long-haul flights can be substantial.

The duty free area at CMB is unusual in that arriving passengers can also shop, including for electrical goods, which surprises most visitors. Departures has the usual tea, spices and gems. Buying Ceylon tea at the airport is convenient but generally poorer value than buying from an estate or a reputable shop during your trip.

Mattala Rajapaksa International near Hambantota in the deep south handles a small number of international services and is convenient for Yala and the southern coast, though schedules are limited and change.

Ratmalana, just south of Colombo, handles domestic flights and some regional services, and Jaffna's Palaly airport has connections to India. Domestic flights and seaplane services also operate between Colombo and destinations including Sigiriya, Trincomalee, Jaffna and Koggala, which can save a long drive on a short trip.

Treat the arrival day as a write-off and plan nothing beyond a transfer, a shower and a meal. Long-haul flights into Colombo commonly land in the early hours, and trying to start sightseeing on the same day is a reliable way to be exhausted for the first three days of a trip.
