Colombo on a luxury 7-day Sri Lanka itinerary

Colombo has the island's best restaurants and its grandest city hotels, and the luxury week as usually drawn does not go near it. Whether it should depends almost entirely on your flight times.

Quick answer

Colombo is not part of the standard luxury 7-day Sri Lanka itinerary, which drives from the airport straight to Sigiriya and returns by expressway from Galle. Add a night in Colombo if you land after about 4pm, if your flight home leaves before noon, or if restaurants and city life matter to you. The city is 35 to 45 minutes from Bandaranaike International Airport by expressway, and the night is usually taken from Kandy or from the south coast.

Key takeaways

  • Colombo lies about 35 kilometres south of Bandaranaike International Airport, 35 to 45 minutes by the airport expressway.
  • A landing after about 4pm makes the four to five hour drive to Sigiriya a night journey, which is worth avoiding.
  • A Colombo night on a six-night week is taken from another stop, most often Kandy.
  • Colombo has the highest concentration of fine restaurants and bars in Sri Lanka, mostly in Colombo 1, 2, 3 and 7.
  • A flight home before noon is far easier from Colombo than from the south coast, which is two and a half hours away.

Why the luxury week usually skips Colombo

Colombo is left out of most luxury 7-day Sri Lanka itineraries for a simple reason: the week has six nights and four regions to see. The airport is at Katunayake, 35 kilometres north of the city, and the expressways allow a traveller to arrive and leave without entering the capital at all.

That is the right default for a first visit with a morning arrival and an evening departure. Sigiriya, Kandy, the hills and the coast each give something Colombo cannot, and none of them can spare a night without a reason.

A late arrival

A late landing is the best reason to put Colombo on a luxury week. If your flight arrives after about 4pm, the drive to Sigiriya runs into darkness on roads shared with buses, lorries and the occasional elephant north of Dambulla. Night driving on that route is tiring and shows you nothing.

A night in Colombo solves it. You reach a hotel on the seafront within the hour, sleep properly and leave at 7am. The alternative is Negombo, ten to twenty minutes from the terminal, which is closer but has fewer hotels at a luxury level.

  • →Landing before 2pm: drive to Sigiriya.
  • →Landing 2pm to 4pm: drive, or stop at Negombo.
  • →Landing after 4pm: stay in Colombo or Negombo.

An early departure

An early flight home is the second good reason. From Galle the airport is roughly two and a half to three hours away, so a 9am departure means leaving the coast at about 3am. Few travellers want the week to end that way.

Spending the last night in Colombo turns day 7 into a gentle drive up the coast, an afternoon in the city and dinner at one of its better tables. The transfer the next morning takes under an hour at that time of day.

  • →Flight before noon: last night in Colombo.
  • →Flight between noon and 6pm: either works.
  • →Flight after 8pm: stay on the coast.

What Colombo offers for one night

Colombo rewards one evening and one morning. The Fort and Pettah districts hold the colonial commercial buildings and the markets. Galle Face Green fills with families and kite flyers at sunset. Cinnamon Gardens, known as Colombo 7, has the National Museum, tree-lined avenues and the better boutiques.

Food is the stronger draw. Colombo is where Sri Lankan chefs cook most ambitiously, from crab restaurants and modern takes on rice and curry to Jaffna, Malay and Muslim cooking that is hard to find elsewhere on the route. Tables at the best-known places need booking days ahead.

  • →Sunset: Galle Face Green.
  • →Dinner: crab, or a tasting of regional Sri Lankan dishes.
  • →Morning: Pettah market with a guide, or the museum.

Where to stay

Luxury hotels in Colombo are large and international in style, clustered along the seafront in Colombo 1, 2 and 3, with a few smaller boutique houses in Colombo 7. Rooms cost roughly US$150 to US$400 a night, which makes the capital the least expensive luxury stop in the country.

Choose the seafront for a first or last night. The views are of the Indian Ocean, the restaurants are a short drive away, and the expressway entrance is close. Traffic in the city is heavy from 7.30am to 9.30am and from 4.30pm to 7pm.

What a Colombo night costs the route

A Colombo night on a luxury 7-day Sri Lanka itinerary has to come from somewhere. Taking it from Kandy means seeing the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic by day on the drive through. Taking it from the coast leaves one night by the sea, which is thin after a five-hour drive.

Lankan Stays & Trails usually takes the night from Kandy for late arrivals and from the coast for early departures, and suggests an eighth day to anyone who wants the city without giving something up. With seven nights instead of six, Colombo fits without strain.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stay in Colombo on a one week trip to Sri Lanka?

Only with a reason. Stay a night in Colombo if you land after about 4pm, if you fly home before noon, or if you care about restaurants and city life. Otherwise, a week is better spent in Sigiriya, Kandy, the hill country and on the south coast.

How far is Colombo from the airport?

Bandaranaike International Airport is at Katunayake, about 35 kilometres north of central Colombo. The airport expressway makes the journey in 35 to 45 minutes outside rush hours. Between 7.30am and 9.30am and from 4.30pm to 7pm, allow up to an hour and a quarter.

Is Colombo or Negombo better for a first night?

Negombo is closer, at 10 to 20 minutes from the terminal, and suits very late arrivals who only need a bed. Colombo is 35 to 45 minutes away and has far better hotels and restaurants. At a luxury level, Colombo is usually the better choice unless you land after midnight.

What is there to do in Colombo for one day?

Walk the Fort and Pettah districts with a guide in the morning, visit the National Museum or Gangaramaya Temple, have lunch in Cinnamon Gardens, and be on Galle Face Green for sunset. Dinner is the highlight, with the best crab and modern Sri Lankan cooking in the country.

Are luxury hotels in Colombo expensive?

Less than elsewhere in Sri Lanka. Rooms in the leading seafront hotels cost roughly US$150 to US$400 a night, well below the top lodges and villas on the rest of the route. Rates are steadier through the year, since the city depends on business travel.

Can I drive from Colombo airport to Sigiriya at night?

You can, and drivers do it daily, but it is not recommended. The four to five hour route uses unlit main roads with heavy bus and lorry traffic, and wild elephants cross north of Dambulla after dark. Stay near the airport and leave at first light.
