A tropical escape to Sri Lanka after Eid, for Turkish travellers

The extended break that often surrounds Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı in Turkey, sometimes combined with annual leave either side, gives many Turkish travellers one of their longer available windows for a trip abroad each year. Because Sri Lanka's west and south coasts typically stay warm most months, roughly 27-31°C by day and 26-29°C in the sea, this window works as a genuine tropical escape whichever point in the calendar it falls.

This matters because Bayram is a moving target: Ramazan Bayramı (Eid al-Fitr) and Kurban Bayramı (Eid al-Adha) both shift each year with the lunar calendar, drifting through the seasons over a roughly 33-year cycle. A destination that depends on one narrow seasonal window would eventually stop working for a post-Eid trip, whereas Sri Lanka's broadly warm, year-round coast does not have that problem.

Both Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı are set by the lunar Islamic calendar, so their Gregorian-calendar dates shift by roughly 10 to 11 days earlier each year, and the current year's dates should always be confirmed with an official source before booking flights or accommodation. This article deliberately does not state a specific date for either holiday in any given year, since doing so would be wrong within a year or two.

What stays constant is the planning logic: whenever Bayram falls, checking Sri Lanka's two-monsoon pattern for that specific month, rather than assuming a single 'best season', is the more useful exercise than trying to fix the destination to a calendar month.

Sri Lanka has a two-monsoon system: the south-west monsoon, roughly May to September, mainly affects the west and south coasts, including Negombo and Bentota, while the north-east monsoon, roughly October or November to January, mainly affects the east and north. In practice this means that whichever month a post-Eid trip falls in, there is very often a coast on the island that is calmer and drier than the others.

Negombo and Bentota, both on the west coast, are reliable choices outside the south-west monsoon months, while a trip falling during that window might instead lean towards the east coast or simply expect some rain showers, which are typically short and do not rule out a beach holiday entirely.

Negombo, close to Bandaranaike International Airport, suits the first and last nights of a post-Eid trip well, easing the arrival after the non-stop flight and the departure before it. Bentota, further down the west coast, combines a wide beach with a calmer river and lagoon, a comfortable base for the main part of the holiday.

Kandy, inland, adds the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Kandy Lake as a cultural day or two within a few hours' drive of the coast, a useful way to give a short post-Eid break some variety beyond the beach.

Because Bayram is a well-known travel window in Turkey, flights and popular accommodation around those dates can book up and rise in price ahead of the confirmed dates each year, so it is worth booking as early as reasonably possible once the current year's dates are confirmed. Turkish citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), applied for online before departure, which is worth completing well ahead of a busy travel period rather than leaving until the last few days.
