Airport logistics for a 7-day Sri Lanka itinerary

Most visitors to Sri Lanka need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, applied for online before travel. Rules, fees and eligible nationalities change, so check the current official requirements well before departure rather than relying on older advice.

Share your flight number and arrival time with your driver or transfer company, and keep their contact number offline on your phone. If your flight connects through a hub, check whether you will need to collect bags and re-check them, since that affects how late you might arrive.

Finally, look at the arrival time and decide in advance where you will sleep on night one. That single decision changes the shape of the first two days of the 7-day route.

After landing, you pass through immigration, collect bags and clear customs, which typically takes under an hour, though queues vary at busy times. The arrivals hall has currency exchange counters, ATMs, mobile network kiosks selling tourist SIM cards, and a duty-free shopping area.

Change or withdraw enough rupees for the first two or three days, since card acceptance outside hotels is patchy in the Cultural Triangle. Compare exchange rates between counters. Buy a data SIM if you do not have an eSIM, since maps, messaging and ride-hailing apps all depend on it.

Your driver will usually meet you in the arrivals area holding a name board. Pre-arranged transfers avoid negotiating with touts in the terminal.

The classic 7-day Sri Lanka itinerary drives straight from the airport to Sigiriya on day 1, roughly four to five hours. That works well with a morning or early-afternoon landing, arriving before dark.

With a landing after roughly 6pm, a night in Negombo, around 20 minutes from the airport, is the better choice. Driving four to five hours on unlit rural roads after a long-haul flight is tiring and less safe, and arriving at Sigiriya near midnight wastes the next morning anyway.

Negombo has a range of beach hotels and guesthouses, and a morning walk by the lagoon or the fish market is a gentle introduction to Sri Lanka before the drive north.

On the classic route, day 7 starts on the south coast and ends at the airport. Galle to the airport takes roughly two and a half to three hours via the Southern Expressway and the airport expressway; Mirissa adds roughly an hour. Traffic around Colombo in the late afternoon is the main variable.

Aim to reach the airport around three hours before an international departure, and keep at least an hour of buffer on the drive. For a 9pm flight, that means leaving Galle by around 3pm, which allows a morning in the fort and lunch.

For flights before roughly 3pm, skip Galle and drive straight from the coast. For flights in the early hours of the morning, a late dinner on the coast and a night drive, or a final night in Negombo, are both sensible.

A final night in Negombo makes sense for very early morning departures, and for travellers who would rather not risk the expressway on the final day. It costs a night on the coast, but turns departure into a short, stress-free transfer.

Some coast hotels offer late checkout or a day room for guests on late-night flights. Ask when booking, since availability is limited in the peak season.

Negombo also works as a last-night base for travellers who want a final evening that is not in a car. The lagoon, the fishing harbour and the Dutch-era canal give it enough character for an easy last walk, and the airport is then only a short drive the next morning.

Check-in and security at Bandaranaike can be slow at busy times, particularly in the evening when many long-haul flights leave. Have your passport, boarding details and any printed documents ready.

Spend or change leftover rupees before leaving, since they are difficult to exchange abroad. Duty-free shops sell tea and spices, but the choice is usually wider and prices better in Galle or Kandy, so do most shopping during the week.

Before booking flights, check how the arrival and departure times fit the 7-day route. A morning arrival and an evening departure give the most usable time; a late arrival and early departure can cost the best part of two days.
