Quick answer

A Galle Test and safari trip takes about ten to twelve days: arrive and drive about 2.5 hours to Galle, watch the five-day Test, then drive about three hours to Tissamaharama for two nights and a Yala National Park safari, or to Udawalawe for elephants, before returning to the airport. Yala is best roughly February to July and usually closes for part of September and October; Udawalawe is good all year.

Key takeaways

  • Yala National Park and Udawalawe National Park are each about three hours by road from Galle.
  • Yala is best roughly February to July and usually closes for part of September and October.
  • Udawalawe has elephant herds all year and is the most reliable park for seeing them.
  • Two nights near a park allows a morning and an afternoon drive.
  • From Yala or Udawalawe, the airport near Colombo is about four to five hours by the expressways.

The shape of the trip

A Galle Test and safari trip combines the five days of a Test at Galle International Stadium with two or three nights near Yala or Udawalawe. With an arrival day, the drive between the coast and the parks, and the return to the airport, the trip takes about ten to twelve days.

The safari can come before or after the Test, or in the gap of a two-Test series. After the Test is usually best, because an early finish gives more time at the park.

  • →Arrival: drive to Galle, about 2.5 hours.
  • →Test: five days at Galle.
  • →Safari: two or three nights near Yala or Udawalawe.

The Galle Test

Stay in Galle Fort, a five-minute walk from the ground, or at Unawatuna, about 15 minutes away. Play usually runs from about 10 am to 5.30 pm, leaving mornings and evenings free for the fort and the beach.

Galle Tests often finish inside four days, so keep the hotel booking flexible for the last nights and the safari booking open to start a day early.

Lankan Stays & Trails builds this trip with a driver who stays with the group from Galle to the park and on to the airport, so an early finish simply moves the plan forward.

  • →Base: Galle Fort or Unawatuna.
  • →Play: about 10 am to 5.30 pm.
  • →Book flexibly for days four and five.

Two nights at Yala

Yala National Park, about three hours from Galle via the Southern Expressway and Hambantota, is the place for leopards, with one of the highest densities in the world in Block 1. Sloth bears, elephants, crocodiles and water buffalo are also common.

Stay in Tissamaharama or near the gate at Kirinda or Palatupana. Take a morning drive from about 5.30 am to 11 am, rest through the heat, and an afternoon drive from about 2.30 pm to 6 pm. In the evening, the Kataragama puja is about 30 minutes away.

Yala is best roughly February to July, when water is scarce and animals gather, and usually closes for part of September and October.

  • →Base: Tissamaharama.
  • →Drives: morning and afternoon.
  • →Closure: usually part of September and October.

Udawalawe for elephants

Udawalawe National Park, about three hours from Galle, is the better choice if elephants are the priority or if Yala is closed. Its open grasslands around the reservoir hold herds all year, and sightings are almost certain.

The Elephant Transit Home, next to the park, rescues orphaned calves and returns them to the wild. Visitors can watch the calves being fed from a viewing platform, at set times about four times a day.

  • →Elephants: almost certain, all year.
  • →Elephant Transit Home: watch feeding.
  • →Open when Yala closes.

Choosing between Yala and Udawalawe

The choice depends on the season and the priority. For leopards and a wild landscape of lagoons and beaches, choose Yala, ideally between February and July. For elephants, a quieter experience and reliability in any month, choose Udawalawe.

With three nights, it is possible to do both: two nights at Yala and one at Udawalawe on the way back to the airport, which is about four to five hours from either park by the expressways.

  • →Leopards and landscape: Yala.
  • →Elephants and quiet: Udawalawe.
  • →Both: three nights.

Back to the airport

From Yala or Udawalawe, the airport near Colombo is about four to five hours by road, mostly on the Southern and airport expressways. For a morning flight, spend the last night in Negombo, about 20 minutes from the airport.

For an evening flight, a morning safari and an early lunch leave just enough time to drive back and check in.

Frequently asked questions

Can you combine a Galle Test with a safari?

You can. Yala and Udawalawe national parks are each about three hours from Galle, so two nights near a park after the Test, with a morning and an afternoon drive, fits a trip of ten to twelve days. Keep the safari booking flexible in case the Test finishes early.

How far is Yala from Galle?

Yala National Park is about three hours by road from Galle, via the Southern Expressway and Hambantota. Most visitors stay in Tissamaharama, about 30 minutes from the main gate at Palatupana, and take a morning safari the next day.

Is Yala or Udawalawe better after a cricket Test?

Yala is better for leopards and wild scenery, best roughly February to July. Udawalawe is better for elephants and is reliable all year, including when Yala closes for part of September and October. With three nights, you can visit both.

When is the best time for a Yala safari?

Yala is best roughly February to July, during the dry season, when water is scarce and animals gather at waterholes. It usually closes for part of September and October. Early-morning and late-afternoon drives are the most rewarding at any time of year.

How many nights do you need for a safari?

Two nights near a park allows a morning and an afternoon drive, the minimum for a good chance of seeing leopards at Yala. One night is possible but tiring after a long drive. Three nights allows both Yala and Udawalawe.

What is the Elephant Transit Home?

The Elephant Transit Home, next to Udawalawe National Park, rescues orphaned elephant calves, raises them and returns them to the wild. Visitors can watch the calves being fed from a viewing platform at set times. It is a responsible alternative to elephant attractions where animals are kept for display.

How far is Yala from Colombo airport?

Yala is about four to five hours by road from Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport, mostly on the Southern and airport expressways. For a morning flight, spend the last night in Negombo, about 20 minutes from the airport, rather than driving through the night.
