South coast sightseeing in one day

One day is not enough to see all of Sri Lanka's south coast, but it is enough to see its best stretch well. This plan covers Galle Fort, the Peace Pagoda, Koggala, Weligama and Dondra Head, with time for lunch and a swim, and finishes at sunset.

Quick answer

South coast sightseeing in one day works best on the stretch from Galle to Matara, about 45 kilometres. Start at Galle Fort at 8am, visit the Japanese Peace Pagoda on Rumassala, continue to the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum and Koggala Lake, stop for lunch and a swim near Weligama, see Kushtaraja Gala, then reach Weherahena and Dondra Head in the afternoon. A private car and driver for the day costs roughly US$50 to US$90. Return to Galle or stay in Mirissa.

Key takeaways

  • The Galle to Matara stretch, about 45 kilometres, holds the densest cluster of sights on the south coast.
  • Galle Fort needs at least two to three hours in the morning, before the heat builds.
  • Koggala combines the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum, Koggala Lake and the stilt fishermen in one stop.
  • Dondra Head, the southernmost point of Sri Lanka, makes a fitting late afternoon finish.
  • A private car and driver for a full day usually costs roughly US$50 to US$90.

Why focus on Galle to Matara

South coast sightseeing in one day works best when it focuses on one stretch, and Galle to Matara is the richest. In about 45 kilometres it holds Galle Fort, the Peace Pagoda, Koggala's museum and lake, the stilt fishermen, Weligama, Weherahena and Dondra Head, all within short drives of each other.

Trying to cover the whole coast from Bentota to Tangalle in one day means more time in the car than at the sights. Choosing one stretch leaves time to enjoy each place, have lunch and swim.

Morning: Galle Fort and Rumassala

Start at Galle Fort at about 8am, before the heat builds and the crowds arrive. Walk the ramparts, see the lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church and the lanes, and visit the National Maritime Museum. Two to three hours is a good minimum.

At around 10.30am, drive 15 minutes to the Japanese Peace Pagoda on Rumassala for the view back across the bay to the fort. Spend 30 minutes there, then continue east along the coast road.

  • →8am: Galle Fort ramparts and lanes.
  • →9.30am: National Maritime Museum.
  • →10.30am: Japanese Peace Pagoda on Rumassala.

Midday: Koggala and lunch

At Koggala, about 20 minutes east, visit the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum for an hour, then take a short boat trip on Koggala Lake if time allows. The stilt fishermen are on the beach nearby.

Have lunch near Ahangama or Weligama, about 15 to 20 minutes further on, with a rice and curry meal or seafood by the sea. Allow time for a swim on Weligama beach, and see Kushtaraja Gala rock carving nearby.

  • →11.30am: Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum.
  • →12.45pm: optional short Koggala Lake boat.
  • →1.30pm: lunch and a swim near Weligama.
  • →3pm: Kushtaraja Gala.

Afternoon: Weherahena and Dondra Head

In the afternoon, continue east past Mirissa to Matara, about 25 minutes. Visit Weherahena temple, with its painted underground gallery and giant seated Buddha, for 45 minutes.

End the day at Dondra Head, the southernmost point of Sri Lanka, with its lighthouse of roughly 49 metres. Watch the late afternoon light over the ocean, then return to Galle, about an hour and a quarter, or stay in Mirissa.

  • →3.30pm: Weherahena temple.
  • →4.45pm: Dondra Head lighthouse.
  • →6pm: return or overnight in Mirissa.

Alternatives for different interests

The one-day plan can be adapted. Nature lovers can replace the museum with Kottawa rainforest in the early morning, and add a lagoon boat. Temple lovers can add Yatagala near Unawatuna and swap Koggala for Kataluwa's murals.

From a base in Tangalle, a different day works better: Mulkirigala at dawn, Wewurukannala, the Hummanaya blowhole and a swim at Hiriketiya. From Bentota, the stretch to Galle via Ambalangoda and Hikkaduwa makes a good day.

  • →Nature: Kottawa, Koggala Lake, Weligama.
  • →Temples: Yatagala, Kataluwa, Weherahena.
  • →From Tangalle: Mulkirigala, Wewurukannala, Hummanaya.

Practical tips

A private car and driver for the day usually costs roughly US$50 to US$90, depending on the vehicle and distance. Tuk-tuks can cover shorter stretches but are less comfortable for a full day. Start early and carry water, sunscreen and a sarong for temples.

Lankan Stays & Trails plans one-day south coast routes around each traveller's base and interests, timing sights for the light and the heat. For more than one day, our longer south coast plans spread the same sights more gently.

Frequently asked questions

Can you see the south coast of Sri Lanka in one day?

You can see its best stretch, from Galle to Matara, in one full day, covering Galle Fort, the Peace Pagoda, Koggala, Weligama, Weherahena and Dondra Head. Seeing the whole coast from Bentota to Tangalle needs at least three to four days.

What is the best one-day route on the south coast?

Galle to Matara is the richest one-day route, with Galle Fort in the morning, Rumassala, Koggala and Weligama in the middle of the day, and Weherahena and Dondra Head in the afternoon. It covers about 45 kilometres plus detours.

How much does a south coast day tour cost?

A private car and driver for a full day usually costs roughly US$50 to US$90, plus entry fees and meals. Guided tours with a licensed guide cost more. Prices vary by vehicle, season and distance.

Can you do a south coast day trip from Colombo?

It is possible but long. Galle is about one and a half to two hours from Colombo by expressway, so a day trip allows Galle Fort and one or two nearby stops before returning. Staying at least one night on the coast is far more rewarding.

Should I start the day in Galle or Mirissa?

Starting in Galle and finishing in Mirissa or Matara works well, as Galle Fort is best in the morning and Dondra Head in the late afternoon. Starting in Mirissa and ending in Galle at sunset also works, reversing the order.

Is one day enough for Galle Fort?

For most travellers, two to three hours in the morning covers the ramparts, lanes, lighthouse and a museum. An overnight stay inside the walls lets you enjoy the fort in the evening and early morning, which many visitors find the best times.

What should I bring for a day of south coast sightseeing?

Bring water, sunscreen, a hat, a sarong or scarf for temples, swimwear and a towel, and some cash for entry fees, donations and roadside snacks. Slip-on shoes are useful, as shoes come off at every temple.
