Sri Lanka vs Maldives: cost from Switzerland

For a Swiss traveller comparing the two purely on cost, Sri Lanka wins for most budgets and most travel styles. A comparable standard of comfort, a well-run boutique hotel, good food, a private driver for touring, costs noticeably less in Sri Lanka than an equivalent Maldives resort stay, because Sri Lanka has a mid-range accommodation market the Maldives, by geography, largely does not.

The Maldives is not simply expensive across the board. At the very top end, both destinations have genuine luxury options at broadly similar price points. The gap widens sharply in the middle of the market, which is exactly where most Swiss travellers are actually shopping.

A comparable standard of comfort in Sri Lanka, a boutique hotel or a private villa, costs noticeably less, since the country has an established, competitive hotel market rather than a handful of self-contained resort islands.

This is the single biggest lever in the whole comparison. Confirm exactly what any Maldives quote includes, full board, half board or room-only, before comparing it directly against a Sri Lanka figure, since headline resort prices can look deceptively close to a Sri Lanka daily rate until the inclusions are stripped out.

A Maldives resort transfer, particularly a seaplane, is a genuinely significant added cost on top of the international flight and is sometimes excluded from headline resort rates. Sri Lanka's airport transfers by road from Bandaranaike International Airport are comparatively inexpensive and are usually included in a driver-guided itinerary.

Day-to-day spending follows the same pattern once you land. In Sri Lanka, a meal outside the hotel, a tuk-tuk fare or a national park entry fee runs on local prices and is inexpensive relative to Switzerland, one of the world's most expensive countries to live in day to day. In the Maldives, almost all spending happens inside the resort at resort prices, since there is rarely anywhere else to go.

The Maldives is built around one thing done extremely well: a private island, a lagoon and a slow, resort-based pace, with diving and snorkelling as the main activity beyond relaxing. Sri Lanka is a touring destination, ancient cities, tea-country hill trains, a leopard safari and two coastlines, and the cost comparison reflects that structural difference as much as raw pricing does.

Families with older children, travellers who want variety within one trip, and anyone who wants their spending to buy a longer or richer holiday tend to find Sri Lanka the stronger value fit. Couples wanting maximum relaxation in a shorter window, with no decisions to make once they arrive, often still prefer the Maldives despite the higher cost.

Sri Lanka's south and west coasts, along with the Maldives, share roughly the same dry-season window from December to March or April, which overlaps neatly with the Swiss Christmas and New Year break and with the Sportferien winter-sports break in late January and February. Both destinations are at their best precisely when Swiss demand for a winter escape peaks, which also means both carry peak-season pricing at exactly that time.

Outside that window, Sri Lanka has a genuine structural advantage: its east coast runs a separate dry season roughly May to September, so a Swiss traveller with different dates still has a good option. The Maldives has less seasonal variation by geography but sees a wetter, choppier period roughly May to October.

The decision usually comes down to what a Swiss traveller wants their budget to buy: more days and more variety, or maximum simplicity in a shorter, pricier window.
