Sri Lanka vs Zanzibar for Swiss travellers

If a shorter flight, a beach-and-spice-tour holiday and Stone Town's atmospheric old quarter sum up what you want, Zanzibar delivers all three efficiently and has earned its fast-growing popularity on Swiss leisure routes for good reason.

If you want a longer, more varied trip, ancient cities, cool hill country, a proper wildlife safari and two coastlines, Sri Lanka offers considerably more range for a somewhat longer journey, and generally at a comparable or lower daily cost.

Zanzibar has grown quickly as a Swiss leisure destination in recent years, with seasonal direct or near-direct service from Zurich on the routes that have operated, at a flight time of roughly 9 to 11 hours. As with any seasonal leisure route, schedules and operators change from year to year, so confirm current options rather than assuming a fixed departure day or airline.

Sri Lanka has no non-stop flight from Zurich or Geneva. SWISS does not fly there, so the route runs via a Gulf hub (Doha, Abu Dhabi or Dubai) or via Istanbul, for a total door-to-door journey of roughly 12 to 17 hours depending on the connection and layover length.

Both destinations are considerably less expensive than Switzerland day to day, which is a genuine, worthwhile selling point for either. Zanzibar's beach-resort strip along the east and north coasts carries a fairly standard resort pricing structure, while Stone Town and inland spice-tour excursions are noticeably cheaper.

Spice plantation tours and Jozani Forest, home to the red colobus monkey, round out a short but rewarding cultural stop.

Sri Lanka's cultural and natural breadth is larger in scope: multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites across ancient cities, cave temples and colonial forts, cool tea-country hills, and a proper wildlife safari with a realistic chance of a leopard sighting, none of which Zanzibar, as a compact island, offers at the same scale.

Zanzibar suits families wanting a simple, beach-based trip with one or two bases, calm turquoise water on the north coast, and short excursions to Stone Town or a spice farm that do not demand a full day's driving. It works well for families who want to unpack once and stay largely in one place.

Sri Lanka suits families wanting their children to see more, an elephant gathering, a hill-country train, a fort to climb, and who are comfortable with a touring itinerary that moves base every few nights. Both are genuinely good family destinations; the difference is again largely one of pace.

Zanzibar's driest, most reliable season runs roughly June to October, with a shorter secondary dry window around December to February, which partially overlaps with the Swiss Christmas and New Year break but sits less cleanly against the Sportferien in late January and February than Sri Lanka's coast does.

Sri Lanka's south and west coasts run their dry season roughly December to March, aligning closely with both the Swiss Christmas and New Year break and the Sportferien window, and its separate east coast dry season, roughly May to September, gives Swiss travellers with summer holiday dates a well-matched alternative Zanzibar's single monsoon pattern cannot mirror as precisely.

The decision generally comes down to how much of the trip should be spent moving between different landscapes and experiences versus settled on one stretch of coast.
