Where to stay on the culture, wildlife and beach route

The culture, wildlife and beach route has seven bases, and choosing the right area at each makes a real difference to the trip. A hotel by a tank at Anuradhapura, a room facing the rock at Sigiriya or a cove near Tangalle can turn a good stop into a memorable one. This page sets out the best areas at each stop, at every budget.

Quick answer

On the culture, wildlife and beach route, stay near one of the ancient tanks in Anuradhapura; in Sigiriya village for the rock, or Habarana for the elephant parks; by the lake or in the hills above Kandy; near the park gate or reservoir at Udawalawe; beside Tissa Wewa or at a camp near Yala's edge; on a sheltered cove such as Goyambokka at Tangalle; and on the western, swimming end of Mirissa bay or the hill above it. Each area suits different budgets.

Key takeaways

  • Anuradhapura's best hotels sit beside the ancient tanks, close to the sacred city.
  • Sigiriya village is closest to the rock; Habarana is closer to the elephant parks.
  • In Kandy, lakeside hotels are convenient; hillside hotels are quieter with views.
  • Near Yala, Tissamaharama is convenient, Kirinda quieter and park-edge camps closest to the action.
  • At Tangalle and Mirissa, choose a hotel near safe swimming.

Anuradhapura and Sigiriya

In Anuradhapura, hotels are spread around the old town and the edges of the sacred city. The best sit beside one of the ancient tanks, such as Nuwara Wewa or Tissa Wewa, with water views and sunsets. Staying close to the sacred city makes the dawn cycling easy. Luxury options are limited, but good mid-range and heritage hotels exist.

For the three Sigiriya nights, Sigiriya village is closest to the rock and to Pidurangala, with hotels among paddy fields and forest, some with views of the rock. Habarana, roughly 20 to 30 minutes away, is slightly closer to Minneriya, Kaudulla and Polonnaruwa. Dambulla and the Kandalama area offer larger resorts in forest settings.

For this route, with the rock, Polonnaruwa and a safari, Sigiriya village is usually the easiest choice.

  • →Anuradhapura: beside the tanks, near the sacred city.
  • →Sigiriya village: closest to the rock.
  • →Habarana: closest to the parks.
  • →Kandalama: forest resorts.

Kandy

Kandy offers two main choices. Lakeside and central hotels are convenient for the Temple of the Tooth, the lake walk and the evening dance shows, though the town can be noisy and congested. Hillside hotels, a short drive from the centre, are quieter, cooler and often have wonderful views over the valley.

For two nights with an evening puja and a full day, either works. Travellers who dislike traffic should choose a hillside hotel with a driver for trips into town. Kandy's guesthouses are good value for budget travellers.

Kandy is the last large town before the south, with banks, pharmacies and shops.

  • →Lakeside: convenient, busier.
  • →Hillside: quiet, views.
  • →Guesthouses: good value.

Udawalawe and Tissamaharama

At Udawalawe, stay close to the park entrance or the reservoir, so the dawn safari is a short drive. Options range from simple guesthouses to safari camps and lodges. The Elephant Transit Home is near the park, so a nearby hotel makes a late-afternoon visit easy.

For the two Yala nights, Tissamaharama is the most convenient base, with hotels beside Tissa Wewa and in town, roughly 30 to 45 minutes from the park entrance. Kirinda, on the coast near the park, is quieter and closer to the gate. Luxury tented camps and lodges near the park boundary put you closest to the action, at a higher price.

For the full Yala day on day 9, a base close to the gate saves time on the early start.

  • →Udawalawe: near the entrance or reservoir.
  • →Tissamaharama: convenient, by the tank.
  • →Kirinda: quieter, closer to the gate.
  • →Park-edge camps: closest, pricier.

Tangalle

Tangalle's beaches stretch either side of the town. Goyambokka and Silent Beach, west of town, have sheltered coves suitable for swimming, with villas and small hotels. Medaketiya and Marakolliya, east of town, are long, wild beaches with simple cabanas and guesthouses, beautiful to walk but often unsafe for swimming.

Villas between Tangalle and Dickwella offer seclusion, and Hiriketiya, near Dickwella, is a stylish alternative. For swimmers, choose a hotel near a sheltered cove.

Mirissa

Mirissa's hotels and guesthouses line the bay and the hill above it. The western end of the bay is sheltered and best for swimming, and close to the cafés. Hotels on the hill have views and breezes but involve steps. The eastern end, near Coconut Tree Hill, is quieter.

For whale watching, any Mirissa hotel is close to the harbour. Talalla and Weligama, nearby, offer quieter or more family-friendly alternatives. Lankan Stays & Trails matches hotels at each stop to each traveller's budget, style and priorities, and checks that every hotel provides driver accommodation.

A night inside Galle Fort, instead of the second Mirissa night, is a popular alternative for the last night.

  • →Western end: swimming and cafés.
  • →Hill: views and breezes, with steps.
  • →Eastern end: quieter.
  • →Talalla and Weligama: alternatives.

Booking tips

Book the busiest stops first: Sigiriya, Galle and Mirissa fill earliest in peak season. Check that each hotel provides driver accommodation if you are travelling with a driver. For the safari nights, ask about early breakfast boxes and late check-out.

Mix budgets: splurge on one or two special stays, such as a safari camp near Yala or a villa near Tangalle, and choose simpler hotels elsewhere.

  • →Book Sigiriya, Galle and Mirissa first.
  • →Check driver accommodation.
  • →Ask about early breakfast boxes.
