Quick answer

The east coast of Sri Lanka, from Trincomalee and Nilaveli through Pasikudah and Batticaloa to Arugam Bay, is dry, hot and calm roughly from April to September, when the southwest monsoon leaves it in a rain shadow. From about November to January the northeast monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas, with Trincomalee averaging roughly 350 to 400 mm in December. February and March are drying, and October is changeable. Daytime highs are around 30 to 34 °C.

Key takeaways

  • The east coast is dry and calm roughly from April to September, its beach season.
  • The northeast monsoon brings heavy rain and rough seas from roughly November to January.
  • February and March are drying months, with the sea usually calm from March.
  • The east coast is hotter and less humid than the southwest in summer, with highs of 32 to 34 °C.
  • Arugam Bay's surf season, roughly May to October, is driven by the same southwest wind.

The stretch this covers

The east coast runs from Kuchchaveli and Nilaveli, north of Trincomalee, south through Uppuveli and Trincomalee itself, past Pasikudah, Kalkudah and Batticaloa, to Pottuvil and Arugam Bay. Further south it reaches Kumana and the edge of Yala.

The whole coast sits in the dry zone and receives most of its rain from the northeast monsoon and the second inter-monsoon. The north end, around Trincomalee, has a sheltered natural harbour and beaches with calmer water; the south end, around Arugam Bay, is more exposed and known for surf.

Rainfall is fairly even along the coast in summer, but in the northeast monsoon Batticaloa and the central east usually receive more than Trincomalee or Arugam Bay. Trincomalee averages roughly 1,600 mm a year, much of it between October and January.

The dry season: April to September

From about April to September, the southwest monsoon blows across the island and arrives on the east coast as a warm, dry wind from the land. Rain is light: Trincomalee averages roughly 20 to 60 mm a month from May to July. The sea is calm and clear, especially in the mornings.

That is the season for swimming at Nilaveli, Uppuveli, Marble Beach and Pasikudah, snorkelling at Pigeon Island, surfing at Arugam Bay and whale-watching from Trincomalee in some years. Highs reach about 32 to 34 °C, but the humidity is lower than on the southwest coast.

From late August and in September, evening thunderstorms inland become more common, though the coast stays mostly dry.

  • →Calm, clear sea: roughly April to September.
  • →Pigeon Island snorkelling in season.
  • →Arugam Bay surf: roughly May to October.

The wet season: November to January

The northeast monsoon, preceded by second inter-monsoon storms in October, brings the east coast its rain. November and December are the wettest months, with Trincomalee averaging roughly 300 to 400 mm in each, and Batticaloa similar or more. Rain can last for days when a depression passes.

The northeast wind drives swell and murky water onto every beach. Many beach hotels close or reduce services from November to March, boat trips are cancelled, and flooding is possible on low roads around Batticaloa and Ampara.

  • →Wettest: November and December.
  • →Rough, murky sea.
  • →Many hotels closed.

Shoulder months: February, March and October

February is mostly dry on the east coast, but the sea often stays choppy. March is the opening of the season, as the northeast wind dies and the sea settles, usually by mid-month. Trincomalee averages roughly 30 to 60 mm in March.

October is the closing month. Early October can still be good for the beach, but storms become frequent and the sea more changeable as the month goes on.

  • →February: dry but choppy.
  • →March: season opening, sea settling.
  • →October: changeable, storms increasing.

Using east coast weather

The east coast is the beach for trips from April to September, and the natural finish to a route through the Cultural Triangle and the hills in those months. Trincomalee and Pasikudah are best for calm swimming; Arugam Bay is for surf and a more relaxed scene.

Lankan Stays & Trails plans east coast beach stays from April to September and keeps the south coast for the winter months.
