Trincomalee's climate in brief

Trincomalee sits on the northeast coast, in the dry zone, beside one of the finest natural harbours in the world. It receives roughly 1,600 mm of rain a year. From May to August it gets very little, often 20 to 60 mm a month, while November and December each bring roughly 300 to 400 mm.

Temperatures are higher than on the southwest coast in summer: about 33 to 34 °C by day from May to August, falling to about 28 to 30 °C in December and January. Nights are warm, around 25 to 27 °C. The sea is roughly 27 to 30 °C.

  • →Annual rain: roughly 1,600 mm.
  • →Driest: May to August.
  • →Wettest: November and December.

April to September: the beach season

From April, the sea at Uppuveli, Nilaveli and Marble Beach is calm and clear, especially in the mornings. May to August are the most reliable months, with flat water, light rain and sunny days. Boats run to Pigeon Island National Park, where shallow reefs hold coral, reef fish and blacktip reef sharks.

Whale and dolphin trips run from Trincomalee in some years, roughly from May to October, though sightings are less predictable than off Mirissa. Late August and September bring some evening storms, but the beaches stay mostly calm.

The heat is stronger than on the south coast, so the middle of the day is best spent in the shade.

The beaches north of town differ a little. Uppuveli is closest to Trincomalee, with calm water and plenty of guesthouses. Nilaveli is longer and quieter, with boats to Pigeon Island. Marble Beach, south of the harbour, is a sheltered cove. All share the same summer calm and winter roughness.

  • →Calmest: May to August.
  • →Pigeon Island: roughly April to September.
  • →Whales and dolphins: some years, roughly May to October.

October to January: the wet season

October brings inter-monsoon storms, and the northeast monsoon follows in November. November and December are the wettest months, with persistent rain on some days, rough, murky seas and strong wind. Pigeon Island trips are usually cancelled, and some beach hotels close.

January is drying, with less rain, but the sea often stays choppy. Trincomalee is among the parts of Sri Lanka most exposed to Bay of Bengal depressions and cyclones, which are most common from October to December.

  • →Storms: October.
  • →Wettest: November and December.
  • →Drying: January.

February and March

February is mostly dry, but the northeast wind can still bring swell, and the sea at Nilaveli is often choppy. March is the opening month: the wind drops, the sea settles, usually by mid-month, and the beach season begins.

Hotels reopen and prices are lower than in the summer peak, which makes late March and April a good-value window.

  • →February: dry, sea choppy.
  • →March: season opening.
  • →April: calm, good value.
