Galle or Mirissa after Ella

Not every itinerary includes a safari. Many travellers go straight from the tea country to the sea, dropping from the cool of Ella to the coast in a single drive. It is one of the great scenic transfers on the island and one of the longer ones, which makes the choice of destination worth a moment's thought.

Quick answer

After Ella, go to Mirissa before Galle. The drive from Ella to Mirissa takes roughly four to five hours, while Ella to Galle takes roughly five to five and a half, and Mirissa offers a swim at the end of it. Most travellers then spend two or three nights at the beach and finish with a night in Galle Fort before the airport. Go directly to Galle only if you have one coast night left or are travelling between May and October.

Key takeaways

  • Ella to Mirissa is roughly four to five hours by road; Ella to Galle is roughly five to five and a half.
  • The road descends from roughly 1,000 metres at Ella to sea level, passing Ravana Falls and Wellawaya.
  • Udawalawe lies close to the route and can be added as a safari stop or an overnight.
  • There is no direct train from Ella to the south coast; the transfer is by road.
  • Temperatures rise by roughly 8 to 10°C between Ella and the coast.

The drive from Ella to the south coast

The drive from Ella to Galle or Mirissa begins with a steep descent through the Ella Gap, past Ravana Falls, to the dry plains at Wellawaya. From there the usual route runs south through Thanamalwila and Udawalawe or via Tissamaharama, meeting the coast near Hambantota or Matara.

Mirissa is reached in roughly four to five hours, depending on the road chosen and the number of stops. Galle is a further 45 minutes to an hour by the coast, or about the same using the Southern Expressway from Matara. Allow more time than a map suggests; the first hour out of Ella is slow and winding.

  • →Ella to Wellawaya: roughly 45 minutes of hairpins.
  • →Ella to Mirissa: roughly four to five hours.
  • →Ella to Galle: roughly five to five and a half hours.
  • →Leave by nine to arrive for a late-afternoon swim.

Why Mirissa is the easier first stop

Mirissa is the easier first stop after Ella because the drive is shorter and the reward is immediate. After days of walking in the hills, the first swim in warm water is a real pleasure, and Mirissa's bay is ready for it within minutes of check-in from December to April.

Stopping at Mirissa first also sets up the rest of the coast stay in the right direction. Two or three nights at the beach, a whale-watching morning and then a move west to Galle leaves the shortest airport transfer for the final day. Nothing is driven twice.

  • →Shorter drive by 45 minutes to an hour.
  • →A swim on arrival.
  • →Whales the next morning or the one after.
  • →Galle follows naturally on the way out.

When Galle makes more sense

Galle makes more sense than Mirissa after Ella in three cases. With a single night on the coast before flying, the fort is the better one-night stop and is closer to the airport. Between May and October, Mirissa's sea is rough and Galle is the practical choice.

The third case is the traveller who has had enough nature and wants a town: pavements, shops, restaurants and architecture after a week of hills and trains. For them the extra hour of driving is repaid by an evening on the ramparts. Leave Ella by eight to arrive before sunset.

  • →One coast night: Galle.
  • →May to October: Galle.
  • →Craving a town: Galle.
  • →Leave Ella early to catch the sunset.

Where to break the journey

Breaking the journey from Ella makes the day more comfortable. Ravana Falls, ten minutes below Ella, is a short photo stop. Buduruwagala, near Wellawaya, has seven tall rock-cut Buddhist figures from around the tenth century in a quiet forest setting, a detour of about half an hour.

Udawalawe is the larger option. The elephant transit home feeds orphaned calves at set times, viewed from a platform, and the national park offers afternoon jeep safaris. Adding a safari turns the transfer into a long day, so many travellers stay a night at Udawalawe and continue to Mirissa, two to two and a half hours on, the next morning.

  • →Ravana Falls: ten minutes from Ella.
  • →Buduruwagala: rock-cut figures near Wellawaya.
  • →Udawalawe transit home: feeding times through the day.
  • →Udawalawe safari: best with an overnight stop.

Planning the days after Ella

Planning the days after Ella is mostly about protecting the first afternoon on the coast. Aim to arrive in Mirissa by two or three, swim and stop. Leave whales for the following morning. Dress in layers for the drive, since Ella at dawn can be 16 to 18°C and the coast at midday 30°C or more.

Travellers without a private vehicle can go by bus via Matara, changing once or twice, in six to seven hours. Lankan Stays & Trails drives the route with a stop at Buduruwagala or Udawalawe and plans two or three Mirissa nights and a Galle finish for most guests coming down from the hills.
