Pasikudah on a honeymoon

Pasikudah is a crescent bay on the east coast, about 35 kilometres north of Batticaloa. A reef across its mouth breaks the swell, and the water inside is as calm as a lake. A line of resorts was built along the shore from around 2010, and the bay has since become the east coast's answer to a classic beach retreat.

Quick answer

Pasikudah on a honeymoon suits four or five nights between May and September for couples who want calm water and a resort with everything on site. The bay is sheltered and shallow, staying about waist deep for a long way out, which makes it one of the safest swimming beaches in Sri Lanka. There is little to do beyond the sea, the pool and the spa. Polonnaruwa is roughly an hour and a half inland, and the airport six to seven hours away.

Key takeaways

  • Pasikudah Bay is protected by a reef and stays shallow far from shore, with almost no waves in season.
  • The season runs from roughly May to September, when the south and west coasts are in monsoon.
  • Pasikudah is roughly two and a half to three hours from Sigiriya and about 35 kilometres north of Batticaloa.
  • Kalkudah, the neighbouring bay to the south, is a long and usually empty beach.
  • The drive to the airport takes six to seven hours, so a late flight or a stopover night is needed.

Why Pasikudah suits honeymooners

Pasikudah suits honeymooners who want the beach part of the trip to be effortless. The resorts face the bay in a row, each with gardens running to the sand, a large pool, a spa and several places to eat. You need not leave the property for days.

The water is the draw. It is warm, clear on calm days and so shallow that swimming is more like floating. Couples who are nervous in waves, or who simply want to stand in the sea with a drink at sunset, will not find better in Sri Lanka.

  • →Flat, shallow water with no shore break.
  • →Resort comfort without travelling for meals.
  • →Very little noise or traffic.

The bay, the reef and Kalkudah

The bay at Pasikudah curves for about two kilometres. Glass-bottom boats and snorkelling trips go out to the reef, where the coral is patchy but fish are plentiful. Please do not stand on coral in the shallows, which has suffered from trampling.

Kalkudah lies ten minutes south, a straight sweep of sand backed by palms with scarcely a building on it. It is the place for a long walk at sunrise. The sea there is more open than Pasikudah's, with gentle waves on most days in season.

  • →Pasikudah: swimming, floating, paddle-boarding.
  • →Kalkudah: empty sand and sunrise walks.
  • →The reef: boat trips of about an hour.

Batticaloa, the lagoon and Polonnaruwa

Outings from Pasikudah are optional and worthwhile. Batticaloa, 45 minutes south, is a lagoon city with a seventeenth-century Dutch fort and bridges where, on still nights, local people listen for the so-called singing fish, a low hum from the water that has never been fully explained.

Polonnaruwa is roughly an hour and a half inland. The ruined capital of the twelfth century has a royal palace, the stone Buddhas of Gal Vihara and wide lawns under old trees. Go at opening, cycle or drive between the monuments and be back at the pool by early afternoon.

  • →Batticaloa: fort, lagoon and bridges, 45 minutes south.
  • →Polonnaruwa: ruined capital, about an hour and a half inland.
  • →Kalkudah: the nearest outing, ten minutes away.

Pasikudah or Trincomalee

Pasikudah and Trincomalee are the two main choices for an east coast honeymoon, and they differ clearly. Pasikudah is a resort bay with the calmest water and the most polished hotels. Trincomalee has longer beaches, snorkelling at Pigeon Island, whale trips and a town with history.

Choose Pasikudah to rest and Trincomalee to combine rest with activity. They are about two and a half to three hours apart, so a honeymoon with six or more beach nights could include both, though one stay is simpler.

Nights, season and the journey

Four or five nights at Pasikudah is typical for a honeymoon. The season is May to September, and July and August are the busiest, when rooms should be reserved three to four months ahead. Outside the season the bay is rougher and several resorts scale back.

The journey is the drawback. From Sigiriya it is an easy two and a half to three hours, but the airport is six to seven hours away. Lankan Stays & Trails usually ends a Pasikudah honeymoon with a night near Negombo, or checks whether flights from Batticaloa are operating.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pasikudah good for a honeymoon?

Pasikudah is very good for a honeymoon focused on rest. The bay is calm and shallow, the resorts are comfortable and the atmosphere is quiet. It suits couples who want a pool, a spa and still water more than those who want sightseeing or nightlife.

When is the best time to visit Pasikudah?

May to September is the best time, with dry weather and the sea at its calmest. April and October can be pleasant but are less settled. From November to February the north-east monsoon brings rain and waves, and the bay loses its appeal.

Is the water at Pasikudah really that shallow?

Yes. In much of the bay the water remains between knee and waist depth for a hundred metres or more from the shore, with a sandy bottom. It deepens gradually towards the reef. Tides are small, so conditions change little through the day.

Is Pasikudah or Trincomalee better for a honeymoon?

Pasikudah is better for calm water and resort comfort. Trincomalee is better for variety, with Nilaveli beach, Pigeon Island snorkelling, whale watching and Koneswaram Temple. Couples who like to be active for part of each day usually prefer Trincomalee.

How do we get to Pasikudah?

Pasikudah is roughly two and a half to three hours by road from Sigiriya and six to seven hours from the airport. Most honeymooners arrive from the Cultural Triangle. Trains run from Colombo to nearby Valaichchenai and Batticaloa, though the journey is long.

Are there private pool villas in Pasikudah?

Some resorts at Pasikudah have suites or villas with private plunge pools, but they are fewer than on the south coast. Most rooms open onto gardens with the bay beyond. Book the higher categories early for July and August.
