A Sri Lanka honeymoon itinerary in July

A July honeymoon in Sri Lanka runs on the summer route. The east coast is in full season, the dry-zone elephants are gathering at Minneriya and, in many years, the first nights of the Kandy Esala Perahera fall before the month is out. It is also the start of the European holidays, so the east is no longer empty.

Quick answer

A Sri Lanka honeymoon in July should use the summer route: Negombo one night, Kandy two, Ella or a tea bungalow two, Sigiriya three and Trincomalee, Nilaveli or Pasikudah four. July is dry and sunny on the east coast and in the Cultural Triangle, while the south-west has monsoon rain. The Kandy Esala Perahera is held in July or August according to the lunar calendar, and the Minneriya elephant gathering builds from July. Book east coast hotels three to four months ahead.

Key takeaways

  • July is peak season on Sri Lanka's east coast, with calm sea from Nilaveli to Arugam Bay.
  • The Kandy Esala Perahera runs for about ten nights in July or August, on dates set by the lunar calendar.
  • Elephants begin gathering at Minneriya and Kaudulla from roughly July as other water sources dry up.
  • Yala is dry and productive in July, though it lies far from the summer route.
  • European school holidays make July and August the busiest months for east coast hotels.

Is July good for a Sri Lanka honeymoon?

July is the best month of the middle of the year for a Sri Lanka honeymoon. The east coast weather is as reliable as the south coast's in February, the Cultural Triangle is dry and golden, and the hill country on the Ella side has many clear days.

The limits are geographic. The south and west coasts are in monsoon, so Galle, Mirissa and Bentota are not beach options. The summer route is also longer in the car than the winter one, because the east coast is five to six hours from the airport at the end.

  • →Best for: east coast beaches, elephants, the perahera.
  • →Watch for: holiday crowds from mid-July.
  • →Avoid: planning beach days in the south-west.

The July honeymoon route

The July honeymoon route begins in the hills and ends by the sea. From Negombo, Kandy is three to three and a half hours by road. Two nights there allow the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the botanic gardens at Peradeniya and, if the dates fall right, a seat for the perahera.

The train to Ella takes six to seven hours and is worth a whole day. After two nights, drive north to Sigiriya, roughly five to six hours, for three nights. Trincomalee is about two hours beyond. Couples who prefer shorter drives can skip Ella and add its nights to the coast.

  • →Night 1: Negombo.
  • →Nights 2 to 5: Kandy and Ella.
  • →Nights 6 to 8: Sigiriya.
  • →Nights 9 to 12: the east coast.

The Kandy Esala Perahera on a honeymoon

The Kandy Esala Perahera is one of Asia's great processions, held to honour the Sacred Tooth Relic. For about ten nights, drummers, Kandyan dancers, fire twirlers and dozens of caparisoned elephants parade through the town. The final nights, the Randoli perahera, are the grandest.

Seeing it on a honeymoon takes planning. Seats along the route are sold in advance and cost a good deal more on the last nights. Hotels in Kandy raise their rates sharply and insist on minimum stays. The procession lasts three to four hours, so eat first and bring patience.

Elephants at Minneriya in place of Yala

Minneriya National Park, half an hour from Sigiriya, replaces Yala on the July route. As the dry season advances, elephants from across the region walk to the grass that grows on the bed of the shrinking Minneriya reservoir. By late July a herd of a hundred or more is common, and it grows through August and September.

A private jeep in the late afternoon is the way to see it. The elephants are wild, so numbers and location vary, and trackers move between Minneriya and nearby Kaudulla according to where the herds are. Leopards are not part of this safari.

  • →Go from about three in the afternoon for the best light.
  • →Ask your driver which park the herds are using that week.
  • →Keep a respectful distance and avoid jeeps that crowd the animals.

Booking a July honeymoon

Booking a July honeymoon needs three to four months for the east coast, where there are few high-quality hotels and they fill during the European holidays. Kandy during the perahera needs longer still, often six months.

Lankan Stays & Trails reserves perahera seats together with the Kandy hotel, since the two sell out together. If the procession dates miss your trip, the temple's evening puja at about half past six is a quieter and equally memorable alternative.

  • →East coast rooms: three to four months ahead.
  • →Perahera seats and Kandy hotels: up to six months.
  • →Train seats: as soon as booking opens.

Frequently asked questions

Is July a good month for a Sri Lanka honeymoon?

July is a very good month if the beach nights are on the east coast. Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Pasikudah have dry weather and calm sea, the Cultural Triangle is sunny and the Kandy Esala Perahera may fall within the month. The south and west coasts are wet and rough.

Where is the best beach in Sri Lanka in July?

Nilaveli and Uppuveli near Trincomalee and the bay at Pasikudah are the best beaches in July. All are on the east coast, which is sheltered from the south-west monsoon. Pasikudah has the calmest, shallowest water, and Nilaveli has snorkelling at Pigeon Island.

When is the Kandy Esala Perahera?

The Kandy Esala Perahera is held over about ten nights ending on the Esala full moon, which falls in July or August. The exact dates shift each year with the lunar calendar and are announced in advance. Check them before fixing the Kandy nights of a honeymoon.

Can we visit Yala in July?

Yala is open and excellent in July, with dry conditions and frequent leopard sightings. The difficulty is distance. Yala is in the far south-east, a long way from Sigiriya and Trincomalee. It fits a July route only if you finish at Arugam Bay, about two and a half to three hours away.

Is the hill country wet in July?

The western hill country around Nuwara Eliya and Hatton is windy and often misty in July. Ella, Haputale and Bandarawela, on the eastern slopes, are much drier. For a July honeymoon, stay on the Ella side and expect bright mornings with a strong breeze.

Is Sri Lanka busy in July?

Sri Lanka is moderately busy in July. The east coast and Kandy during the perahera are at their fullest, and the south coast is quiet. Sigiriya and the trains are busier than in June. Booking early and starting each day early keeps a honeymoon comfortable.
