Sri Lanka in April

Avurudu falls on 13 and 14 April and is not a fixed-clock event. Astrologers set the auspicious times for lighting the hearth, eating the first meal, starting work and anointing with oil, and families follow them to the minute. The nonagathe, the neutral period between the old year and the new, is the pause in between when nothing is meant to be started.

For a visitor this means two things. Practically, the country shuts: many shops, restaurants and offices close for several days, intercity buses and trains are packed for a week around the dates, and domestic hotel demand spikes. Culturally, it is one of the warmest experiences you can have in Sri Lanka. Milk rice, oil cakes, village games and the sound of the raban drum are everywhere, and hosts are unusually keen to share it.

The first half of April usually holds. The south and west coasts stay largely dry, the Cultural Triangle is hot and clear, and the hill country is warm with cooler nights. From roughly mid-April the inter-monsoon strengthens: afternoon thunderstorms become frequent and heavier, humidity climbs, and the south-west monsoon begins to make itself felt on the western slopes.

April is the hottest and stickiest month in the lowlands. Colombo, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are demanding by late morning. The hill country is the obvious relief, and April is one of the best months to be based in Ella, Haputale or Nuwara Eliya.

April is the closing month of the southern whale-watching season. Boats from Mirissa still run and still find blue whales, but conditions become less predictable as the month goes on, and the season shifts to Trincomalee on the east coast from around May. If whales are the reason for your trip, book the first half of April.

Safari is still very good. Yala, Udawalawe and Wilpattu remain within the dry-season window that runs to about July, and the parks are much quieter than in February. Sinharaja rainforest is warm and humid but productive for endemic birds, and April brings a flush of flowering that draws them out.

South and west coast beaches are enjoyable through the first half of April, with Mirissa, Tangalle, Unawatuna and Bentota all workable. As the month progresses, the sea on the south-west gets choppier and the surf less clean, and by late April the south-coast surf season is effectively winding down.

The mirror image is beginning on the other side. Arugam Bay's surfers start arriving in late April in anticipation of the May to September season, and Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Pasikudah open up shortly afterwards. Late April is a genuinely awkward crossover fortnight, which is why we usually route April trips inland.

April is Nuwara Eliya's month. The town's colonial-era April Season brings horse racing, a motor race, flower shows and a large domestic crowd around the new year holiday, and every hotel in town is full. It is charming and chaotic in equal measure, and it needs booking months ahead.

The Adam's Peak pilgrimage season runs through April and closes at Vesak in May, so April is the last full month to climb Sri Pada with the steps lit and the tea shops open. Expect heavy crowds on poya nights and around the new year holiday.

If you can choose your dates, either come in the first ten days of April for the tail of the dry season, or come deliberately for Avurudu and accept the closures as part of the experience. The awkward option is arriving on 12 April with a packed sightseeing itinerary and no idea why everything is shut.
