Sri Lanka in June

June sits squarely inside the south-west monsoon, which means the island is sharply divided. The west and south-west coasts and the western hills see regular heavy showers and thundery evenings, and the sea from Negombo round to Tangalle is rough. On the other side of the central massif, the north and east are in their driest, sunniest stretch.

Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Pasikudah are hot and dry with light morning winds and calm water. Jaffna and the northern peninsula are very hot and dusty. The Cultural Triangle around Anuradhapura, Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa stays workable, with hot mornings and occasional afternoon storms. Ella and Haputale, on the drier eastern side of the hills, do better than Nuwara Eliya.

Nilaveli and Uppuveli, roughly 10 to 20 kilometres north of Trincomalee, offer the widest, quietest sand in the country in June, with water that is genuinely flat for most of the day. Pigeon Island National Park, a short boat ride offshore, has the island's most accessible coral and reef fish, plus blacktip reef sharks in the shallows, and June water clarity is the best of the year.

Further south, Pasikudah's shallow crescent bay is safe enough for small children to wade a long way out, and Arugam Bay's surf season is building towards its peak. Blue whale and spinner dolphin trips run out of Trincomalee from roughly May to September, so June is a solid month for both.

Poson Poya, on the June full moon, commemorates the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka when the monk Mahinda met King Devanampiya Tissa at Mihintale in the third century BCE. It is the second most important poya of the year after Vesak, and Mihintale and neighbouring Anuradhapura become the focus of an enormous pilgrimage.

Hundreds of thousands of people dressed in white climb Mihintale's 1,840 granite steps, often through the night, while dansal stalls line the roads giving out food and drink. If you want to understand Sri Lankan Buddhism as a living practice rather than as ruins, Poson at Mihintale is the single best day of the year to be here. Book accommodation in Anuradhapura months in advance, and expect heavy traffic on the roads north.

Kalpitiya, on the north-west coast about three hours from Colombo, has one of Asia's most dependable kitesurfing seasons. From roughly May to September the south-west monsoon generates strong, steady cross-shore wind that arrives most afternoons, and the huge flat-water lagoon behind the peninsula makes it unusually forgiving for learners.

June is squarely in that window. The same peninsula is also the base for dolphin watching in the Kalpitiya Bar Reef area, though the calmest dolphin season is generally in the opposite months, so treat June as a wind trip rather than a dolphin trip.

Do not plan south-west coast beach time. Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa and Bentota are wet, and more importantly the sea is rough with strong currents. The southern whale season has ended. White-water rafting at Kitulgala runs at high, fast water in June, which is thrilling but not for beginners or nervous swimmers.

Yala's Block 1 usually stays open through June, and safari is still decent at the drier end of the dry-season window, but it is a long, wet drive from anywhere you would want to be based in June. Udawalawe and Wilpattu are the easier picks.

The cleanest June itinerary lands in Colombo, moves straight to the Cultural Triangle for Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa, crosses to Trincomalee and Nilaveli for a week of coast, and returns via Kandy. Add Arugam Bay if you surf, and Jaffna if you want the north at its most vivid.
