Quick answer
Choose the Maldives if you want the finest beaches and clearest water in the world and are content to spend the whole trip on one resort island. Choose Sri Lanka if you want variety: wildlife safaris, ancient cities, mountains, tea country, surf and beaches within one country. Sri Lanka is substantially cheaper for equivalent comfort, offers far more to do, and has good but not Maldivian beaches. The two are about an hour apart by air and combine well in one trip.
Key takeaways
- The Maldives has objectively better beaches and clearer water; Sri Lanka does not compete on that alone.
- Sri Lanka offers leopard safaris, ancient cities, mountains, tea estates and surf, none of which the Maldives has.
- Sri Lanka is substantially cheaper for equivalent standards of accommodation and food.
- Maldives resorts are one-island stays; leaving costs money and a seaplane or speedboat transfer.
- The islands are roughly an hour apart by air, which makes a combined trip straightforward.
The short answer
If your ideal holiday is fourteen days of doing nothing on the most beautiful beach in the world, book the Maldives. Sri Lanka will not beat it and we would not pretend otherwise.
If the thought of two weeks on one small island without leaving it makes you restless, book Sri Lanka. And if you want both, do both: a week touring Sri Lanka followed by five nights in the Maldives is one of the best two-week itineraries available anywhere.
- →Pure beach and water, nothing else needed: Maldives.
- →Variety, wildlife, culture, mountains: Sri Lanka.
- →Best of both: Sri Lanka first, Maldives second, roughly an hour's flight apart.
- →Tight budget with high standards: Sri Lanka, by a wide margin.
Beaches and water: the Maldives wins
This has to be said plainly. Maldivian beaches are white coral sand with lagoons in shades of turquoise that photograph as though they have been edited. Visibility for snorkelling and diving is exceptional, house reefs sit metres from the shore, and manta rays and whale sharks are accessible.
Sri Lanka's beaches are good and in places excellent: Nilaveli and Uppuveli in season, Tangalle's bays, Pasikudah's shallow crescent, Mirissa's curve. But the sand is golden rather than white, the sea is Indian Ocean rather than lagoon, and the reef snorkelling, apart from Pigeon Island, is modest. Anyone choosing Sri Lanka purely for beaches has made a mistake.
- →Maldives: white coral sand, turquoise lagoons, exceptional snorkelling and diving.
- →Sri Lanka: good golden-sand beaches, but ocean rather than lagoon.
- →Best Sri Lankan beaches: Nilaveli, Uppuveli, Pasikudah, Tangalle, Mirissa.
- →Sri Lanka's only world-class reef snorkelling is Pigeon Island, in season.
Things to do: Sri Lanka wins comprehensively
Sri Lanka is roughly the size of Ireland and contains eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, one of the highest leopard densities in the world, the largest gathering of Asian elephants anywhere, blue whales off two coasts, a 2,500-year-old irrigation civilisation, mountains rising to 2,500 metres, tea estates, rainforest, surf on two coasts and a genuinely distinctive cuisine.
The Maldives has water. That is not a criticism, it is the product: 99 percent of the country is sea, and resorts are built around water sports, spas and dining. Excursions exist, sandbank picnics, dolphin cruises, a trip to a local island, but you are on one island for the duration and the range of things to do is deliberately narrow.
- →Sri Lanka: eight UNESCO sites, leopard and elephant safaris, whale watching, hiking, surfing, tea country.
- →Maldives: diving, snorkelling, water sports, spas, dining, sandbank excursions.
- →Sri Lanka rewards a two-week touring itinerary; the Maldives rewards stillness.
- →The Maldives is the better destination for serious divers.
Cost
Sri Lanka is considerably cheaper for an equivalent standard of holiday. Maldivian resorts bundle accommodation, food and transfers because there is nowhere else to eat, and seaplane or speedboat transfers alone can cost more than several nights of good accommodation in Sri Lanka. Drinks and excursions at resorts are priced accordingly.
In Sri Lanka you can eat superbly for very little, travel by private car and driver-guide for a fraction of what a comparable arrangement costs elsewhere, and stay in genuinely luxurious boutique hotels and tea bungalows for well under Maldivian resort rates. The Maldives does have budget options on local islands now, which have changed the picture considerably, but the resort experience remains expensive.
- →Maldives resorts bundle everything because there are no alternatives on the island.
- →Seaplane and speedboat transfers add substantially to the total cost.
- →Sri Lanka: eating out is inexpensive, and private driver-guides are affordable.
- →Maldivian guesthouses on local islands are the budget alternative, and much cheaper than resorts.
Who each suits
Honeymooners split roughly down the middle. The Maldives is unbeatable for privacy, overwater villas and doing nothing together. Sri Lanka suits couples who would get bored, and offers a more varied, more memorable trip for less money.
Families with young children often do better in the Maldives, where a resort handles everything and the lagoon is safe to swim in. Families with older children usually do better in Sri Lanka, where there is enough happening to hold their attention. Solo travellers should choose Sri Lanka, which is sociable, easy to move around and inexpensive. Divers should choose the Maldives.
- →Honeymoon, privacy, doing nothing: Maldives.
- →Honeymoon with variety and better value: Sri Lanka.
- →Very young children: Maldives resorts handle logistics better.
- →Older children and teenagers: Sri Lanka has far more to occupy them.
- →Solo travellers: Sri Lanka. Serious divers: Maldives.
Seasons
The Maldives has one dry season, running roughly November to April, and a wetter south-west monsoon season from about May to October. It is a small country and the weather is broadly the same across it.
Sri Lanka has two monsoons on opposite coasts, which means there is always a good coast. December to March suits the south and west, and May to September suits the east and north. This is a genuine advantage: a Sri Lankan trip can be planned successfully in any month, which is not true of the Maldives.
- →Maldives: dry season roughly November to April, wetter May to October.
- →Sri Lanka: south and west good December to March; east and north May to September.
- →Sri Lanka can be visited successfully in any month with the right route.
- →October is the weakest month in both.
Doing both
This is the answer more people should choose. Colombo to Male is roughly an hour and a half by air with frequent direct flights, so combining them costs one short flight rather than a major detour.
The sequence matters. Do Sri Lanka first, touring the Cultural Triangle, hill country and a safari, then finish with four or five nights in the Maldives doing nothing. Doing it the other way round means arriving at your safari already relaxed and leaving your holiday tired. Ten days in Sri Lanka plus five in the Maldives is close to a perfect fortnight.
- →Colombo to Male: roughly 1.5 hours, with frequent direct flights.
- →Best sequence: Sri Lanka first for touring, Maldives second for rest.
- →Ten nights Sri Lanka plus five nights Maldives is a strong fortnight.
- →Both share a November to April window on Sri Lanka's south and west coasts.
Planning either
If you have decided on Sri Lanka, the main planning question is which coast your dates suit, because that determines the whole route. If you are combining, book the Sri Lankan leg first and fit the Maldivian resort dates around it, not the other way round.
Lankan Stays & Trails plans the Sri Lankan portion of combined trips and will tell you honestly if your dates and priorities point towards the Maldives instead. We would rather you had the right holiday than our holiday.
Frequently asked questions
Is Sri Lanka better than the Maldives?
It depends what you want. The Maldives has better beaches and clearer water, and is unbeatable if you want to do nothing beautifully. Sri Lanka offers wildlife safaris, ancient cities, mountains, tea country and surf, is far cheaper, but its beaches do not compete.
Is Sri Lanka cheaper than the Maldives?
Substantially, for equivalent comfort. Maldivian resorts bundle accommodation, food and expensive seaplane or speedboat transfers because there are no alternatives on the island. In Sri Lanka, eating out is inexpensive and a private car with driver-guide is affordable.
Can you visit both Sri Lanka and the Maldives in one trip?
Yes, easily. Colombo to Male is roughly an hour and a half with frequent direct flights. The best sequence is Sri Lanka first for touring, then the Maldives for rest. Ten nights in Sri Lanka plus five in the Maldives makes an excellent fortnight.
Which is better for a honeymoon, Sri Lanka or the Maldives?
The Maldives for privacy, overwater villas and doing nothing together. Sri Lanka for couples who would get restless, offering a more varied and memorable trip for considerably less money. Many honeymooners combine the two, touring Sri Lanka then resting in the Maldives.
Are Sri Lanka's beaches as good as the Maldives?
No. Maldivian beaches are white coral sand with turquoise lagoons and exceptional snorkelling, and Sri Lanka does not match that. Sri Lanka's best beaches, including Nilaveli, Uppuveli, Pasikudah, Tangalle and Mirissa, are good golden-sand ocean beaches rather than lagoons.
Which is better for families, Sri Lanka or the Maldives?
Very young children usually do better in a Maldivian resort, where logistics are handled and the lagoon is safe. Older children and teenagers usually do better in Sri Lanka, where safaris, rock fortresses, surfing and train journeys give them far more to engage with.
When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka and the Maldives together?
December to March works for both, covering the Maldivian dry season and Sri Lanka's south and west coast season. If you travel between May and September, plan the Sri Lankan leg around the east coast and Cultural Triangle instead, and expect a wetter Maldives.
