Malé's Velana International Airport, by contrast, is often just the start of a second leg for resort-based travellers. Many Maldives resorts require a further transfer by seaplane or speedboat, and seaplanes only operate in daylight, so a late-arriving flight can mean an overnight stop near the airport before continuing the next morning.

Flight prices to both destinations move with season, particularly around UK school holidays, and booking several months ahead generally secures the best fares on either route. Neither destination is reliably cheaper to fly to than the other; the cost difference between a Sri Lanka and Maldives trip comes from accommodation, not the flight itself.

For the Maldives specifically, always check whether the seaplane or speedboat transfer is included in your resort quote, as it's sometimes booked and paid separately and can be a meaningful added cost.

If you're time-sensitive on arrival day, Sri Lanka's road transfer is the more predictable option: you know roughly how long it will take regardless of when you land. If you're heading to the Maldives, book a flight that lands with enough daylight left for a seaplane connection, or budget for an overnight near the airport.
