Sri Lanka vs Thailand for Indian travellers

Sri Lanka generally wins on flight time for Indian travellers, particularly from South India. Chennai to Colombo takes roughly ninety minutes, and Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Kochi and Hyderabad connect in roughly two and a half to four and a half hours, mostly direct or with one convenient stop, reflecting the island's exceptional flight connectivity to India.

Thailand is also well connected to India, with direct flights to Bangkok from most major Indian cities, but total journey time generally runs longer at three to five hours depending on origin city, since Bangkok sits considerably further from India than Colombo does.

Indian passport holders normally need an Electronic Travel Authorisation or visa for Sri Lanka, a requirement that has changed more than once in recent years, including periods of a free-entry pilot scheme, so it should be confirmed on the official Sri Lankan immigration portal shortly before travel.

Thailand has periodically offered visa-exemption or visa-on-arrival arrangements for Indian travellers, though the specific terms and duration have shifted over time, so this too is worth confirming against current official guidance before booking either trip.

Thailand receives a considerably higher volume of international visitors than Sri Lanka, which shows up at popular sites: longer queues, denser resort strips, and more built-up tourist zones in places like Phuket or Chiang Mai. That scale also means a wider range of price points, nightlife and package options, and Thailand has long been a favoured destination for Indian travellers specifically, which shows in the ease of finding Indian food and Hindi-speaking staff in tourist areas.

Sri Lanka's tourism numbers are lower, so major sites like Sigiriya Rock or Galle Fort feel less crowded, particularly outside the December to March peak. The trade-off is a smaller, if growing, base of formal tourist infrastructure outside the main circuit compared with Thailand's decades-long head start.

Sri Lanka's compactness is its clearest advantage. In a single one to two week trip, a traveller can realistically cover ancient cities in the Cultural Triangle, hill-country tea estates around Kandy or Nuwara Eliya, a wildlife safari, and a south or west coast beach stretch, generally without an internal flight, using road transfers of two to four hours between regions.

Thailand's regions are more spread out. Combining northern Thailand (Chiang Mai) with the southern islands typically requires a domestic flight, since the drive between them runs well over twelve hours. Thailand rewards picking one or two regions per trip rather than trying to see the whole country at once.

Sri Lanka has a notable edge for wildlife viewing. Yala and Wilpattu National Parks offer leopard, elephant and sloth bear sightings on a half-day or full-day jeep safari, easily added to a standard itinerary without extending the trip significantly. Minneriya and Kaudulla also host large elephant gatherings seasonally.

Thailand's wildlife tourism is smaller in scale and more often centred on ethical elephant sanctuaries rather than open safari-style parks, since Thailand has fewer large national parks with the same density of visible large mammals.

Choose Thailand if a bigger, more established tourist infrastructure matters most, if nightlife and a wider range of resort price points are priorities, or if the trip is built around one or two specific regions rather than a full-country loop. Choose Sri Lanka if a shorter flight from South India, a compact and varied itinerary with an included wildlife safari, and fewer crowds matter more than infrastructure scale.
