Quick answer
A 10-day Sri Lanka family holiday in July and August swaps the south coast for the east. A typical route is three nights at Sigiriya, three at Pasikudah or Nilaveli, two in Kandy and one in the hills or near the airport. The east coast is dry with calm, shallow seas from roughly May to September, the elephant Gathering at Minneriya is at its peak, and the Kandy Esala Perahera usually takes place in July or August. The south-west coast is rough and wet.
Key takeaways
- Sri Lanka's east coast is in its dry season from roughly May to September, while the south-west monsoon affects Galle, Mirissa and Colombo.
- Pasikudah Bay is shallow for 100 metres or more from the shore, among the safest sea swimming in Sri Lanka for young children.
- The Gathering at Minneriya National Park peaks roughly from July to September, with 200 or more elephants on the reservoir bed.
- The Kandy Esala Perahera usually falls in July or August; dates shift each year with the lunar calendar.
- Trincomalee is roughly two and a half to three hours from Sigiriya, and Pasikudah about two to two and a half hours from Polonnaruwa.
Two monsoons, one good coast
A 10-day Sri Lanka family holiday in July and August relies on the island's two-monsoon pattern. The south-west monsoon, from roughly May to September, brings wind and rough seas to the south and west coasts. The east coast lies in the rain shadow of the central hills and stays dry.
The Cultural Triangle is also dry at this time, hot and breezy, and Kandy is pleasant with occasional showers. The hill country around Ella is windy with some mist. There is always a good coast in Sri Lanka; in the summer holidays it faces east.
- →East coast: dry, calm, 31 to 33 degrees.
- →Sigiriya: dry and hot, 32 to 34 degrees.
- →South-west coast: rough sea, frequent rain.
The summer route
The summer route begins as usual with four to five hours from the airport to Sigiriya for three nights. From there the family drives east: about two to two and a half hours beyond Polonnaruwa to Pasikudah, or two and a half to three hours from Sigiriya to Trincomalee and Nilaveli.
After three beach nights the route turns inland to Kandy, roughly four to five hours from either beach, for two nights. A final night can be spent in Kandy, at a tea estate or near the airport, three to three and a half hours away, depending on the flight.
- →Days 1 to 3: Sigiriya, three nights.
- →Days 4 to 6: Pasikudah or Nilaveli, three nights.
- →Days 7 and 8: Kandy, two nights.
- →Day 9: Kandy, the hills or Negombo; airport on day 10.
Pasikudah or Nilaveli with children
Pasikudah is the east coast beach for small children. Its horseshoe bay is so shallow that an adult can walk out 100 metres and still be waist deep, and there are almost no waves. Resorts with large pools line the sand. There is little else to do, which is the appeal.
Nilaveli and Uppuveli, north of Trincomalee, suit older children. The beaches are long and the sea is deeper, with boat trips to Pigeon Island National Park for snorkelling over coral with reef sharks and turtles. Whale and dolphin trips run from Trincomalee in these months.
- →Pasikudah: toddlers to eight-year-olds; shallow and still.
- →Nilaveli: seven and over; snorkelling and boats.
- →Trincomalee: Fort Frederick, the Koneswaram temple and its spotted deer.
The Gathering at Minneriya
The Gathering is the summer's great wildlife event. As the dry season shrinks Minneriya's reservoir, fresh grass grows on the exposed bed and elephants arrive from the surrounding forest. From July to September, afternoon safaris regularly find 150 to 300 animals in one view.
For families this is the easiest safari in Sri Lanka: a 30-minute drive from Sigiriya, three hours in an open jeep and elephants guaranteed in all but name. It is also busy. Ask the driver to keep back from the herd and let the animals come to you.
Kandy and the Perahera
Kandy in July or August may coincide with the Esala Perahera, ten nights of torch-lit processions with drummers, dancers and caparisoned elephants. For children of about seven and over it can be unforgettable. Seats must be booked ahead, and the procession ends late.
The festival has costs. Hotel prices in Kandy double or more, roads close from mid-afternoon, and the use of chained elephants raises welfare questions that parents may want to discuss. Families with small children often choose dates on either side of it.
- →Check the Perahera dates for your year before booking.
- →Book seats with a clear view and easy exit.
- →Bring ear protection for young children.
Trade-offs and booking
The trade-offs of the summer route are the loss of Ella and Udawalawe from the standard plan and longer drives to and from the east coast. Ella can be kept by giving up a beach night, with a long final drive of five and a half to six and a half hours to the airport.
East coast hotels are fewer than those in the south and fill early for August. Book four to five months ahead. Lankan Stays & Trails plans summer routes around the youngest child's swimming ability and the Perahera dates.
Frequently asked questions
Is August a good time to visit Sri Lanka with kids?
August is a good time to visit Sri Lanka with kids if the route uses the east coast. Pasikudah and Nilaveli are dry and calm, the Cultural Triangle is dry, and the elephant Gathering is at its peak. Avoid south coast beaches.
Which coast of Sri Lanka is best in July and August?
The east coast is best in July and August. Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay are in their dry season with calm seas. The south and west coasts, including Galle, Mirissa and Bentota, are affected by the south-west monsoon.
Is Pasikudah good for young children?
Pasikudah is excellent for young children from roughly May to September. The bay is very shallow and almost waveless for a long way out. Resorts have big pools and family rooms. Shade on the beach is limited, so bring UV tops.
How far is the east coast from Sigiriya?
Trincomalee and Nilaveli are roughly two and a half to three hours by road from Sigiriya. Pasikudah is about three to three and a half hours, or two to two and a half from Polonnaruwa. Roads are good and fairly flat.
Can we still go to Ella in July and August?
You can still go to Ella in July and August. It is breezy, with some mist and showers, and walks remain possible on most mornings. Including it means a longer final drive to the airport and one night fewer at the beach.
Is the Kandy Perahera suitable for children?
The Kandy Perahera suits children of about seven and over who can stay up late and cope with noise and crowds. Processions last three to four hours in the evening. Younger children often find it overwhelming, and seats are expensive.
