Sea temperature in Sri Lanka by month

The sea around Sri Lanka is warm all year, warmer than most of the Mediterranean in August. Its temperature barely changes from month to month. What changes is the waves, the currents and the clarity. Here is the year, and why temperature is the least of the questions.

Quick answer

The sea around Sri Lanka is roughly 27 to 29 °C all year, warm enough for long swims without a wetsuit. It is warmest in April and May, at about 29 to 30 °C, and slightly cooler from December to February and in the southwest monsoon months, at about 27 °C. The difference between seasons is small; what really changes is whether the sea is calm or rough, which depends on the monsoon and the coast.

Key takeaways

  • The sea is roughly 27 to 29 °C all year around Sri Lanka.
  • April and May are the warmest months, at about 29 to 30 °C.
  • December to February and the southwest monsoon months are slightly cooler, at about 27 °C.
  • No wetsuit is needed for swimming; some divers use a thin one for long dives.
  • Waves, currents and clarity matter far more than temperature when choosing a beach.

Month by month

Sea temperatures follow the sun and the monsoon winds. In December to February, the northeast monsoon brings slightly cooler air and water, and the sea is about 27 to 28 °C. March warms to about 28 to 29 °C, and April and May are the warmest months, at about 29 to 30 °C, when the sun is overhead and the winds are light.

From June to September, the southwest monsoon mixes the water on the southwest coast and brings it down to about 27 to 28 °C. The east coast, sheltered from the wind, stays a little warmer, about 28 to 29 °C. October and November are about 28 °C everywhere.

The full range through the year is only about three degrees, much less than the difference between a Mediterranean May and August.

  • →December to February: about 27 to 28 °C.
  • →April and May: about 29 to 30 °C.
  • →June to September: about 27 to 29 °C, warmer in the east.

Differences between the coasts

The east coast is often slightly warmer than the southwest in summer, because the southwest monsoon churns the water on the windward side and leaves the east coast calm and sunny. Shallow bays, such as Pasikudah and the lagoons of the north, warm up further during the day, sometimes above 30 °C.

The far north, around Jaffna, is similarly warm, with very shallow water in places. The deep waters off the south coast, where whales feed, are slightly cooler below the surface, which divers notice at depth.

  • →East coast in summer: about 28 to 29 °C.
  • →Shallow bays: can exceed 30 °C.
  • →Deep water at depth: slightly cooler.

Do you need a wetsuit?

For swimming and snorkelling, no. The water is warm enough for long swims in any month. For surfing, most surfers use only boardshorts or a rash vest, mainly for sun protection.

Divers sometimes use a thin wetsuit of about 3 mm for long or repeated dives, especially in the cooler months, and for protection against coral and jellyfish. Most dive centres in Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Trincomalee and Pigeon Island provide them.

Sun protection matters more than warmth: a rash vest and reef-safe sunscreen are useful on long snorkelling trips.

  • →Swimming: no wetsuit needed.
  • →Surfing: rash vest for sun protection.
  • →Diving: thin wetsuit optional.

What matters more than temperature

The sea is warm everywhere, all year, so the real questions for a beach day are about waves, currents and clarity. The southwest coast is calm from roughly December to April and rough from roughly May to September; the east coast is the reverse. Rough water is also murky, which spoils snorkelling.

Lankan Stays & Trails chooses beach stays on the calm coast for the dates of each trip, so the warm water can be enjoyed.

Water activities by season

Warm water makes Sri Lanka good for water activities all year, but each has its season on each coast. Snorkelling and diving are best on the southwest coast, at Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna, from about December to April, and on the east coast, at Pigeon Island and Trincomalee, from about April to September, when the water is clearest.

Surfing follows the swell and wind: the south coast from about November to April and Arugam Bay from about May to October. Whale-watching runs from Mirissa from about November to April and from Trincomalee in some years from about May to October. Kitesurfing at Kalpitiya is strongest from about June to August.

  • →Snorkelling and diving: southwest December to April, east April to September.
  • →Surfing: south coast November to April, Arugam Bay May to October.
  • →Whale-watching: Mirissa November to April.

Frequently asked questions

What is the sea temperature in Sri Lanka?

The sea around Sri Lanka is roughly 27 to 29 °C all year. It is warmest in April and May, at about 29 to 30 °C, and slightly cooler from December to February and on the southwest coast in the monsoon, at about 27 °C.

What is the warmest sea month in Sri Lanka?

April and May are the warmest months, with sea temperatures of about 29 to 30 °C, because the sun is overhead and winds are light during the first inter-monsoon. Shallow bays such as Pasikudah can be even warmer during the day.

Do you need a wetsuit in Sri Lanka?

Not for swimming, snorkelling or surfing; the water is warm all year. A rash vest is useful for sun protection. Some divers use a thin wetsuit of about 3 mm for long or repeated dives, and most dive centres can provide one.

What is the sea temperature in Sri Lanka in December?

In December the sea is about 27 to 28 °C around the island. On the south and west coasts it is calm and clear, especially in the second half of the month. On the east coast it is just as warm but rough and murky from the northeast monsoon.

Is the east coast warmer than the south coast?

In summer, slightly. From June to September, the southwest monsoon churns the water on the southwest coast, while the east coast stays calm, sunny and about 28 to 29 °C. In winter, the difference is small, though the calm southwest is more pleasant for swimming.

Is the sea in Sri Lanka warmer than the Mediterranean?

Yes, in every month. The sea around Sri Lanka is roughly 27 to 29 °C all year, warmer than most of the Mediterranean even at its August peak of about 24 to 27 °C. Winter is where the difference is greatest.

How does Lankan Stays & Trails choose beaches for warm, calm water?

Because the water is warm everywhere, beach stays are chosen by calm: the southwest coast from about December to April and the east coast from about April to September. Snorkelling and diving trips are booked for the calmest weeks.
