What a 10-day Sri Lanka itinerary leaves out

The standard 10-day route covers the ancient cities, Kandy, the tea hills, a safari and the south coast. That is the heart of Sri Lanka, but not all of it. Here is what ten days has to leave out, why, and how to swap any one of them in if it matters to you.

Quick answer

A 10-day Sri Lanka itinerary leaves out the Tamil north around Jaffna, the east coast from December to April, Anuradhapura, Wilpattu National Park, the Sinharaja rainforest, Adam's Peak and Horton Plains, and Colombo beyond the airport. Each needs roughly one to four extra nights, or a swap with a stop on the standard route. Jaffna and Wilpattu suit a second trip or a two-week route; Anuradhapura, Horton Plains and Adam's Peak can replace one night each.

Key takeaways

  • Jaffna and the north need roughly three to four nights and are best on a two-week route or a second trip.
  • Anuradhapura, Horton Plains and Adam's Peak can each be swapped in for one night on the 10-day route.
  • Wilpattu National Park, known for leopards and quiet tracks, sits on the west side of the island and suits a longer route.
  • The Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage rainforest, needs one or two nights between Yala and the coast.
  • Colombo is usually skipped on a first 10-day trip, but makes a good last evening before a late flight.

Why ten days cannot cover everything

A 10-day Sri Lanka itinerary has nine nights, and the classic route uses them for five bases: Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Yala and the south coast. Sri Lanka's slow roads mean every extra region adds a drive of several hours, and adding more than one usually turns the trip into a series of transfers.

Leaving places out is not a flaw; it is what keeps the ten days enjoyable. The list below is best seen as a menu for a longer trip or a return visit.

The north and the east

Jaffna and the north offer a distinct Tamil culture, with Hindu temples such as the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, islands such as Delft and Nainativu, and a celebrated cuisine. Reaching the north adds roughly three to four nights and a long drive, so it suits a two-week route or a second trip.

The east coast, around Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay, is left out of the December to April route because it is in its wet season then. From May to September, the east-coast version of the 10-day route puts it at the centre.

  • Jaffna: three to four extra nights; best on a longer trip.
  • East coast: included in the May to September version.

Parks and forests

Wilpattu National Park, on the north-west side of the island, is known for leopards, sloth bears and quiet, sandy tracks around natural lakes. It is far from the rest of the route, so it suits a longer trip, often with Anuradhapura.

The Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage lowland rainforest rich in endemic birds, needs one or two nights and fits between Yala and the south coast. Horton Plains and Adam's Peak, in the high hills, each need a night near the trailhead and can replace one Ella night.

  • Wilpattu: a longer route, often with Anuradhapura.
  • Sinharaja: one or two nights between Yala and the coast.
  • Horton Plains: a night in Nuwara Eliya.
  • Adam's Peak: a night in Dalhousie, roughly December to May.

Anuradhapura and Colombo

Anuradhapura, the first great capital and still an active pilgrimage site, is left out because Polonnaruwa, closer to Sigiriya, covers the ancient-city experience in less time. History lovers can add it with a first night there, at the cost of the second Ella night.

Colombo, the commercial capital, is usually skipped on a first 10-day trip. It can work as a last evening before a late flight, with the Galle Face Green promenade and the Pettah markets, but the time is usually better spent elsewhere.

How to swap something in

The simplest rule is one in, one out. Adding a place costs a night somewhere else, and the easiest nights to give up are the second Ella night and the Yala night. Adding two places at once usually means extending the trip.

Each of the variations in this series shows a tested swap: the Anuradhapura version, the Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains version, the Adam's Peak version and the two-week extension.

  • One place in, one night out.
  • Easiest to give up: the second Ella night or Yala.
  • Two or more additions: extend to twelve or fourteen days.

Planning a second visit

Many first-time visitors leave Sri Lanka with a list of places to see next time, and the north, the east and the wilder parks make a superb second trip. Seeing the heart of the island first, then its edges later, is a good way to know the whole country.

Lankan Stays & Trails plans second trips around the north, the east coast and Wilpattu, and our Sri Lanka Grand Tour covers several of these regions in thirteen days. The site's second-time itinerary guide has more ideas.

Frequently asked questions

What does a 10-day Sri Lanka trip miss?

Mainly the north around Jaffna, the east coast in the December to April season, Anuradhapura, Wilpattu, Sinharaja, Adam's Peak, Horton Plains and Colombo. Each can be added by swapping out a night or extending the trip.

Is Jaffna worth visiting?

Yes, for travellers interested in culture, food and a different side of Sri Lanka. Jaffna's Tamil heritage, Hindu temples and islands are distinctive. It needs roughly three to four nights, so it suits a two-week route or a second trip.

Should I visit Wilpattu or Yala?

Yala has more leopard sightings and fits the 10-day route. Wilpattu is quieter and wilder, with fewer jeeps, but sits far from the rest of the route and suits a longer trip combined with Anuradhapura.

Is Colombo worth visiting on a short trip?

Usually not on a first 10-day trip, when time is better spent in the Cultural Triangle, the hills and on the coast. Colombo can work as a last evening before a late flight, with Galle Face Green and the markets of Pettah.

Can I add the east coast to a 10-day trip?

From May to September, yes: the east-coast version of the route replaces the south coast and Yala with Trincomalee or Nilaveli. From December to April, the east coast is in its wet season, so it is left out.

What should I see on a second trip to Sri Lanka?

Jaffna and the north, the east coast and Arugam Bay, Wilpattu National Park, Sinharaja rainforest, Adam's Peak and Horton Plains are the most popular additions. Together they show the island's edges after a first trip through its heart.
