Quick answer
A safari day trip from Kandy is possible, with the nearest parks two and a half to three hours away. Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks, near Habarana, are the best choice from roughly July to October, when hundreds of elephants gather on their lake beds. Wasgamuwa National Park, to the east, is a similar distance and far quieter. Leave Kandy by 10.30 in the morning for an afternoon safari from about 2.30 to 5.30, and expect to return around 9 at night. Staying near the park is much better.
Key takeaways
- Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks lie about 100 kilometres north of Kandy, a drive of two and a half to three hours.
- The elephant gathering at Minneriya and Kaudulla peaks from roughly July to October, in the dry season.
- Wasgamuwa National Park is about 95 kilometres from Kandy via Hasalaka and receives a fraction of the visitors of Minneriya.
- Udawalawe and Yala national parks are four and a half to six hours from Kandy and are not realistic as day trips.
- A half-day jeep safari takes about three hours, and afternoon drives give the best elephant viewing.
The parks within reach of Kandy
The parks within reach of Kandy all lie in the dry zone to the north and east, beyond the hills. None is close. The choice is between the famous elephant parks around Habarana and the wilder, emptier Wasgamuwa on the Mahaweli River.
The southern parks are out of range for a day from Kandy. Udawalawe is four and a half to five hours each way, and Yala is further still. Any operator offering them as a day trip is selling a day in a van.
- →Minneriya: about 100 kilometres; elephants on the reservoir bed, July to October.
- →Kaudulla: about 110 kilometres; often better than Minneriya from September to November.
- →Hurulu Eco Park: near Habarana; used when the other two are flooded, roughly December to April.
- →Wasgamuwa: about 95 kilometres; elephants, birds and solitude, best June to September.
The elephant gathering
The elephant gathering is the reason most people consider a safari from Kandy. As the dry season advances, the reservoirs at Minneriya and Kaudulla shrink, exposing wide lawns of fresh grass. Elephants from the surrounding forests converge to feed, drink and socialise.
At the peak of the gathering, 200 or more elephants can be in view at once at Minneriya or Kaudulla. Herds move between the two parks and Hurulu through the year, and trackers decide on the day which gate to use. Outside the dry months, sightings are smaller but still reliable.
A realistic day
A realistic safari day from Kandy is built around the afternoon drive, when elephants come out of the forest onto the open ground. Morning safaris from Kandy would mean leaving at 3, which nobody enjoys.
The return journey to Kandy after a safari is the hard part. The road through Dambulla and Matale is unlit, busy with buses and winding in its last third. Lankan Stays & Trails will run the day trip on request, though we usually suggest moving the safari to the Sigiriya leg of the route.
- →10.30: leave Kandy.
- →1.00: lunch near Habarana.
- →2.30 to 5.30: jeep safari.
- →6.00: start back.
- →9.00: arrive Kandy.
What it costs
The cost of a safari day trip from Kandy has three parts: the vehicle from Kandy, the safari jeep and the park entrance. A car and driver for the long day costs about US$70 to US$110. A jeep for the afternoon costs roughly US$40 to US$60.
Park entrance fees for foreign visitors add about US$25 to US$40 per adult once service charges and taxes are included. For two people the full day therefore comes to roughly US$180 to US$260. Shared jeeps arranged near the park gate reduce the cost for solo travellers.
- →Car and driver from Kandy: US$70 to US$110.
- →Private jeep, half-day: US$40 to US$60.
- →Park fees: about US$25 to US$40 per adult.
Better ways to fit in a safari
The better way to fit in a safari is to do it from a base near the park. Sigiriya, Habarana and Dambulla are 30 to 45 minutes from Minneriya and Kaudulla, and nearly every classic itinerary spends two nights there before or after Kandy.
Travellers heading south from Kandy have other choices. Udawalawe fits between Ella and the south coast, and Yala lies beyond it. A route that includes either of these makes a safari from Kandy redundant, however keen you are.
- →Coming from Sigiriya: do the safari there, the afternoon before you drive to Kandy.
- →Going on to Ella and the coast: choose Udawalawe or Yala.
- →Kandy only, no other dry-zone stop: the day trip is justified.
The case for Wasgamuwa
Wasgamuwa National Park is the choice for travellers who dislike crowds. It lies between the Mahaweli and Amban rivers, reached from Kandy by the spectacular road over the hills to Hasalaka. On a typical afternoon a handful of jeeps share nearly 40,000 hectares.
Wildlife in Wasgamuwa includes several hundred elephants, which are warier than those at Minneriya, along with buffalo, spotted deer, crocodiles and rich birdlife. Sloth bears live there and are rarely seen. Facilities at the gate are basic, so arrange the jeep before you set out.
